  • Juko-Kai

    Hey guys,

I was flipping through the channels this weekend when I came across a special on Asian marital arts. It was pretty interesting overall, they showed some Aikido, Karate, and Nin-jitsu. Then they started talking about this system called Juko-Kai that this currently 60 year old former airforce dood made up. Granted, I only experienced 10 minutes of knowledge from this 'art' but I was appalled.

The setting is a Juko-Kai seminar. Example after example is shown of people taking kicks/hits to the chest, neck, and groin by using their 'ki' to block the pain. I'll admit I was impressed since about 85% of the participants looked to be in their mid 40's. But then I realized taking blows was this systems idea of DEFENSE. No blocking, or counter-attacks whatsoever were shown. This is one of the most retarded things I have ever seen. If you're teaching a bunch of 40 year old's to take blows on the street, they're going to have their asses handed to them. And gee, surprisingly enough, this is a 'no-competition art'. Is that beause this principle wouldn't work in a fight? And furthermore, their ki must not be that strong since none of them took any strikes to the face OR experience any submission manuvers.

What do you guys think about arts like these like focus on TAKING blows rather than avoiding them?

Yeah, I saw that same special.

My wife jumped my stuff when I started laughing.

She said "they've been doing this stuff for thousands of years. Maybe you shouldn't laugh..."

Anyway, I am not into anyone kicking me in the jewells. Then I sure as heck wouldn't bow, say thank you and limp away like the one guy did....

I really liked the facial expressions on those folks as well...

The web summation of the episode.

Dr. Sacharnoski gave his third major television demonstration in COMBAT-ki for the Discovery Channel, which will be aired in the fall of 2001. Be sure to look for this spectactular exhibition which contains the FIRST television filming of an actual Combat-Ki Master-test format. Don't miss this one---you'll see a female going through this highly dangerous examination. Come back soon for exciting photos and details along with show air dates.

        grrrr

Another thing... why is "COMBAT" in their styles name? Nothing in the art readies the students for an actual confrontation. I am gunna go look in my phone book to see if i can arrange a challenge match once my jaw heals up. Interesting to see if their ki protects them from ground and pound.

          re

All that "Iron Body" stuff is total bull.

I'll be impressed when someone can use thier "ki" to keep them awake in a triangle.

Choke, fighting a Shaolin monk who trains his entire life is one thing. Fighting a 45 year old who just gets kicked the chest 2 days a week and froms a false ego is another.

                personally...

i'd be scared to fight a dude who dragged an 80-pound rock by his nuts all day... god knows what else he might do...

Isn't this the art that originated the dreaded "Ro Sham Bo" contests?

HEY!! I Am glad someone else saw this too.

                      Hey guys,

I am really glad someone saw this stuff too.
I was going to write a post about it, but Jared beat me to it. lol

Does this shit actually work? That's the first question.

I really was not sure if Sacharnoski is a teacher or a charlatan!

He supposedly teaches Karate as a form of self-defense and the Ki is supposed to help you land blows.

(But then fights happen so fast that I Am not sure how much time one has to sit there and get his Ki in proper form, while the attacker patiently waits.)

                      --------------------

On a funny note: There was another segment a few minutes before the combat-Ki segment.
It was the fat white guy studying Karate in Japan.
Did any of you see this one?

(Where the Sensei beat the crap out of him to see how much he could withstand?)
                      That was FUNNY!
                      I laughed pretty hard.

                      ------------
If anyone else has info on the combat-Ki, please do share.

                      Take care

Well this topic has been brought up again. Juko Kai was on The Learning Channel and was listed as one of the "Ten Ultimate Martial Arts".

Let me re-iterate how ridiculous this 'martial art' is. The segment showed baby-boomers taking strikes to the body without any apparent signs of pain. The instructor then explains how taking blows helps in street confrontations.

While this may be true, in street confrontations you don't have 5 minutes to meditate your Ki and there's usually more than one strike thrown.

IMO any art that stress TAKING BLOWS over dodging/slipping is destined for the gutter.

I agree with you also. When I first saw this are I thought it was ridiculous. I do understand the need for conditioning and being able to take a hit. But their art seems to be focused on getting hit instead of defending themselves.

Maybe they should go up aginst the "Dog Brothers" (who they beat in the ranking) and see if their ki will let them take that kind of punisment!

I watched that martial arts special on the discovery channel. The combat Ki was an absolute disgrace. That guy is doing a total con job on those people. The discovery channel is doing a real public disservice in presenting that material as though it was genuine without showing an opposing viewpoint. What’s next a special on how pigs can predict the future. Or a show on how to channel your ki to do the old walk on burning coals trick.

As for the rest of the arts shown I thought they were all pretty funny. None of the arts presented had much to do with fighting as far as I'm concerned. The most humorous quote was by the karate guy at the beginning who said that forms are one of the most important parts of Karate "without forms all you have is athletics and tricks." LOL. There was a Karate "Master" Breaking wood with his fingers and toes. That was impressive and gross. I think a person would have to be a bit of a nut to put himself through that. Like the guy who used to pick up cinderblocks on a chain attached to his nipples at the Lollapalooza ‘freak show" ugh!

The Aikido is just a joke. It seem to be more about "the culture" than about fighting. I can’t help but think that it’s promoting a "culture" of BS martial arts.

I hate liars and BS artists...That show was full of them...Now that I know the discovery channel and TLC have no quality/honesty standards when producing a piece how can they expect me to every take any of there "educational' programing seriously

I also liked how they mention that black belts from across the nation make a "pilgrimmage" to this guy's home once a year.

I bet it costs a small fortune to hang out with this self-appointed "10th degree blackbelt".
