One thing I must say though, before you all get me wrong here,
although I dislike the public perception of Bruce, I am all for The Straight Blast Gym.

Hey now, I don't compete in tournaments because I don't like to.
I don't have the passion for them. That doesn't mean I'm a fake martial artist. I know a lot of BJJ people who don't like to compete, but do quite well with the competitors behind closed doors (and I was one of them, in both BJJ and judo)
I loved working out with the competitors, and testing myself against them again and again. But I didn't feel like going through a tournament. I never have.

Not because I'm afraid or because I'm "too deadly", but because it doesn't interest me. If I go in a tournament without a passion to win I'm gonna probably lose. Not everyone has the passion and desire to fight in tournaments. But that doesn't mean they don't know how to fight, don't know how to grapple, or haven't won a lot of streetfights and matches with those same tournament goers.

I get your points, Mild7--but you didn't see me say he was the best fighter of all time or even that time. I never said that. We have no way of measuring that.

And what you're saying about how some people practice JKD without knowing they're practicing JKD ("use what works, discard what doesn't") of course is true. He attached the label to this way of thinking. But let's face it: a lot of people need to be shown this way of thinking (hello, Gracies!).

But I wouldn't let your obvious distaste for his idolization cloud what he really did. Nor would I think it's reasonable to assume that were he matched up against a "real" fighter, he'd get his ass kicked.

The idolization part stems, IMO, that he died young. A James Dean-type situation. Were he still alive, he might be viewed as more human, just as any of those iconic stars would have.

"addict" means your are addicted and regularly using. if you so "high" on shit being verified and made official, then post some proof showing he had used hash more than once. and remember, you yourself have discredited heresay as a form of proof, so start back pedalling idiot...

listen, if you make a claim, you bear the responsibility of proving it. you don't make a stupid-ass bull shit claim and ask other people to prove otherwise...retard.
the guy weighed 140 freakin' lbs for pete's sake...

So yes, these all do seem to be based on PURE speculation don't they?
ha ha ha! absolute speculation...and you are an absolute retard!

Oooooh! All these strong feelings about Brucey! There are no verifiable accounts of his feats. He never fought tournaments. He wasn't even a very good actor. And what's with that stupid high-pitched squeal?! I much prefer the Jet Li version of the Chinese Connection - Fist of Legend. Way cooler martial arts scenes and not as much ham-acting.

                tony10:

I agree with you that part of the ridiculous idolization of Bruce stems from his early death. It's the same with other notables like Hendrix, he stole a lot of ideas from other then lesser known guitarists(take Buddy Guy for example) and today he takes credit for it and is viewed as the best ever(which I strongly disagree with as well).
Of course, bruce is a different picture.

Overall, I see where you're getting at and agree with your opinions. Like you, I see Bruce as a great martialarts movie pioneer(where would Segal and vandamme be without Bruce?), an a physically talented but overrated philosopher and fighter. Some good points made by him though.

                ryu:
It's true that to be a good competitor, you need more than just heart. You need everything! But anyway, so long as you work out with other competitors and train with them it is the same I feel. You still get the same aliveness.
Beating up your students though, like most instructors do, is a totally different thing. Anyway, keep up the Judo.

                Bobbysteeles:
Unlike you, I keep a fairly rational mind even when I argue over a topic that I am passionate about. All I have expressed is my dislike for the ridiculous idolization over Lei-Siu-Loong, and you have to start calling me an idiot. This is rather amusing, I wonder what kind of person you must be in everyday life...

Anyway, Bruce Lee did experiment with steroids. I have read this in countless articles/publications about the man. If some ppl find no difficulty believing that Bruce could easily kill Mike Tyson, it is indeed a wonder they find this so hard to believe.

I live away from home now, so I don't have my personal library to access. But on a documentary on Bruce, I think it was the 'curse of the dragon', a bruce lee researcher says clearly that Bruce died in his mistress's house. Even without him saying it, this is very clear. Anyway, any other Bruce researchers here who can help me back up this?

Anyway, pls stop referring to me as a retard, or I'll personally come over to where you're staying, put on my gloves, walk right into your house..... and rip off all the Bruce Lee posters you have up in your room. Don't make me make you cry, little man.

Szczpankiewi..... : no, I have heard of the legendary Magnoliafan though. Is his work any good? The quality of trolls lately has been rather depressing. Not that I am implying I am one of course. I don't believe in trolling.

                  maybe you are good!

                  Hey Mild7,

You asked if I'd label you a great fighter.

Well, if you spar with the likes of Dan Inosanto, Chuck Norris, or Joe Lewis and get their approval, I'd say, "Yes, you are a great fighter."

Now, I know that these guys are in their 50s and 60s. So let's choose some contemporary guys in their 20s and 30s.

If you sparred with Frank Shamrock [pick any name] for example, and he said "Mild7 is a damn good fighter," then I'd have no problem saying you were great.
                  The issue is credibility.

Not everyone wants to compete in tournaments.
Perhaps it is the case that you also have more going in your life than beating other folks up in a cage.

As for the straight blast gym: They are doing exactly what Bruce was preaching 30 years ago: To Spar with live opponents, to keep you body in excellent ATHLETIC SHAPE, to train with heavy bags, etc........
Don't forget how much Shit Bruce caught from the "Masters" because he said that Martial artists like boxers, should train with punching/kicking bags.
Also the fact that he felt katas were useless brought him a lot of unkind words.
I could go on and on, but I'll stop here. LOL

                  Bruce_fan

Ps. As far as his feats: Some of those feats have no names attached to them.
However, I do believe the feats coming from actual sources with names.
For example, the quotes by Dan Inosanto, I've read in different articles and places.
Maybe some people on this board think he is overrated because he has not been in any NHB or MMA matches.
I think he is a living Legend, and the article on the home page about "What constitutes a Master" pays nice homage to him.
So, if Dan or Chuck Norris say that Bruce did something, I think it's a sure bet.
These are guys who have been in Martial arts their whole lives, and even to this day, they are training and keeping close ties to the Martial arts community.

Scz: I'm not Magnoliafan, but I'll go check him out.

By the way, pretty much anything that JKD types refer to as brilliant or ingenius in Bruce's philosophy is just appropriated Tao Te Ching. He never really wrote anything new. In fact, before Bruce, Oyama was saying similar kinds of things about getting beyond the errors of traditional martial arts. But oyama was never pretty and he never made movies. He and his students, however, did consistently fight challengers in Thailand, Japan, and the US. Even still in the K-1, the late Andy and now Filho have been willing to fight anyone. Those guys aren't movie stars, but if I had 3 guys coming at me with wrenches, I'd feel alot better having Filho's baseball bat shins on my side than some hack actor who was said, but never publicly proven, to be good.
Your dreamworld perception of the great Bruce Lee is exemplified by that BS movie Dragon where they make up some bs reason for his injuries and fail to mention that he died at his mistress' house.
Hey, mild7, don't be pissed at their righteous indignation. It's like going to a catholic church and telling the followers they're living in a fantasyworld. They want so badly to believe that they'll (verbally) crush anyone who suggests that they're fooling themselves.

                          .

                          Brucefan;

I've never sparred with Frank Shamrock, but I have sparred with a certain Neil Adams who said I was a tenacious little fellow.

btw, Bruce never sparred with Norris or Lewis. Not in a true, balls-out sparring sense anyway. And as for Inosanto, like I said countless times before, beating up your students don't count. I can introduce you to many ninjutsu instructors(hello Robert) who beat up their students and get worshipped for it.

As for the straight blast gym, it's not because they train with heavy bags/don't do katas that make them so great. It's because they know the meaning of aliveness, and that they are'nt afraid to compete either. Some of the JKD guys I respect the most are those that compete, ever heard of George Carson? What a fighter.
