This past weekend I watched Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, then a film came on, Twin Warriors with Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh.
It is a totally different experience watching these movies now that I have a solid MA foundation. I grew up watching Chinese Kung Fu Theatre (I sure do miss those shows...)
Anyway, my point is that I can really enjoy the "fantasy" of the old style martial arts movies. Those that had people flying through the air and walking up walls. Where one super dude could come in and wipe out 50 bad guys, and still have enough strength to lay the smack down on the Evil leader.
Compare/contrast this with all the "realistic" movies by Seagal, Norris, Van Damme and Bruce Lee. We can look at these and pick them apart move by move and rolling our eyes the entire way.
Not to say that these movies aren't entertaining, but I much rather enjoy watching the movies that are listed as fantasy to those who try to come off realistic.
What do you think?
