  • Royce Gracie leaves Torrance?

There was a post in ADCC that states that Royce left Torrance.
I can only wonder what that is all about

Can anyone confirm whether this is true or not.

I train at one of the Gracie Academy affiliated schools and have some pretty inside information on the reason for his leaving. Apparently, Royce Gracie just wants to be able to do more things on his own without having to conform to any of the rules imposed by Helio and Rorian. From what I heard, Royce told Rorian that he wanted a bigger share of the pie and drew up a contract for Rorian. Rorian agreed and believed that it would only be fair. From what I heard, Rorian was very nice about the whole thing but then Royce came back, after they had agreed, and got a little greedy. Rorian respectfully declined and I have heard that Helio is extremely upset at Royce for the way that he departed. I must agree that if you read Royce's statements regarding the incident (roycegracie.tv), Helio and Rorian have a reason to be. The statement by Royce makes it sound like he does not want to be at all associated with the academy. I've heard that Royce's wife had a lot to do with the incident as well, as she fired up Royce to go against the academy. I think that the honorable thing that Royce could have done was thank Rorian for all of his help throughout the years and continue to endorse Rorian and the academy but merely state that he wanted to try some new things. After all, Rorian served as a father figure when he took Royce in when he came from Brazil and got him to start help teaching his garage classes. On top of that, he showcased Royce in the UFC even though Rickson was supposedly the most fierce fighter of the familly. Rorian always supported Royce and thought that Royce's physique would better show the effectiveness of technique over strength. It's very unfortunate what has happened. However, the academy has two great rising stars in Ryron and Renner (Rorian's sons). They are big, strong, and pure technique.

It's a shame that Royce is leaving. That Gracie Torrance Academy IS the house that Royce built.

As for Royce "getting greedy"...I don't know about that. I used to train at Gracie Torrance academy and Royce is probably the nicest and most mellow dude in there. He has always said during the times when he was fighting that the money UFC gave him was not a problem. The old UFC owners could never lure Rickson to fight there because they wouldn't pay Rickson enough, therefore he went to fight in Japan.

Back then the UFC champion only got 50 grand for winning an 8 man tournament where he had to fight 3 times in one night.
That's chump change compared to what the belt holders are getting now in the new UFC. Royce was the UFC flag bearer back then and was paid peanuts and never complained about money.
He was more concerned with rules..ie time limits.

I bet you today's flag bearer, Tito, gets many times what Royce got back then.

"inside info" sounds more like planted info in this case, that would have come directly from Rorion, who doesn't have the nicest rep out there.
