  • Can a clean armbar really end a fight?

I know we've all seen UFC fights end in armbars.. but what if you tried to end a fight with some idiot on the street using an armbar? Will his arm actually break? It's never happaned in the UFC has it? I've been doing jiu jitsu for a little while now and I worry that some submission moves just won't work. I don't think hyperextending someones arm would be enough to stop them.

    Any replies would be appreciated.

Depends on the guy you are fighting...you can pop the guys elbow, but at the end of the day, I believe it is a much safer option going for a choke or ground and pound from the mount. An arm bar could work, but in circumstance of a street fight, it would cause more damage later, but maybe too late for you. A quick, clean finish, such as a choke or pound into submission is much more fool proof....IMO

When I first started BBJ, I was rolling with a blue belt to get some pointers. He let me get the mount rather sloppily and pushed my chest away from the bottom which exposed his arms. I immediatly did an armbar. I asked him why he let me have the armbar without having me work for it. He told me "Because that's how easy it is on the streets "(to get an armbar). Of course, once you get the mount in a streetfight, the fight is practically finished. How many people, let alone martial artists know how to Oompa someone off their stomachs? Very few.

I recently saw a person get his arm broken during a BJJ training session. The bone that broke was one of the forearm bones. It sounded like a broom stick snapped..OUCH. The technique that snapped the arm was a loose armbar. The guy whose arm broke was a huge guy and I would think on the street it would have slowed him down. What about a keylock? It seems that would be devastateing on the street.

I have a buddy that trains me and he used to fight quite a bit when he was younger.

He's armbarred three different individuals in street fights. None of the dudes were able to fight after this happened. Unlike NHB, the guys didn't have the option of tapping and my bud made sure the elbows were dislocated before he let go.

Reactions varied: One guy actually threw up from getting his elbow broken (probably shock) and another cat that tried to steal his dog cried while holding his arm on the ground.

My brother key locked a guy that was beating down a cop. Although my brother's far nicer than my teacher, he ended the the confrontation by simply applying pressure until the guy screamed and stopped moving. After that, the cop hand cuffed the guy with no problem.

Point being, unless your fighting some freak, armbars and other subs definitely work in a fight. It's hard to fight with broken bones!

          later.....

That’s going to depend on the guy your fighting though. Some guys can get bitch slapped and be done. Others won’t stop till their dead or they can’t move. It’s worth breaking the arm though. Probably most guys will quit and even if they don’t they are now fighting with one less arm which makes anything else you want to do to definitively end it easier.

I once saw a guy take a solid round kick into the knee joint in a street fight. It sounded like kindling breaking. Fight over. Walk away at your leisure.

My old neighbor was a cop. He showed my some literature about a police shoot out where a guy soaked up a shotgun slug and 7 9mm slugs and was still up and returning fire. Hate to get into a street fight with that shit….

I'm with Mr Poopy! Some dudes are just like that, you can give them a fair beating and they will still keep coming. What sort of guys do you expect to fight in the street? It generally won't be merchant bankers or brain surgeons! These dudes can take a beating and are use to it, so don't ever assume anything else, or thats when bad stuff can happen!

I'm new here but I wanna add.

I'm a cop and I have total confidence in armbars for the street. Although I think keylocks are just as effective don't leave you as vulnerable to a pass.

I've personally used both in "da skreet" and they work!
                BTW kewl forum!!

Mickster brings up a good point. My oldest bro is a cop an he's got some stories where guys have taken some major damage in altercations with the police and continued to fight.

Some guys are simply animals, but the guys I train with are far more skilled and tougher than your average thug on the street. I have no doubt about that! So, you can almost bet the house that most guys can't take a solid joint lock and continue to fight with a broken bone.

I will say this. I'm more afraid of the fact that I may not get position to work a submission than a sub not working once you lock it! That's the real problem when you're fighting some tough ass bastard that's strong and can punch! Hell, you can get knocked out before you even get a chance to use your grappling skills. That's my real fear!

I couldn't agree more Keith. I would much rather maintain a moutned or knee-on-stomach position and pummel the bastard than try an armbar that may end up with him passing it, and then I'm on the defense.

Last friday I have actual snapped two fingers, snapped the elbow (not sure if it was dislocated" and thumb-gauged furiously a guy at my shop. It was drunk as shit, and continued to insult my sister, however, he didn't felt the pain, he just kept coming. I was a whisper ahed of using my knife when his friends put him out of my shop.

Don't NEVER count on anything, even a gun wound, on the streets.

I wouldn't do it in a streetfight unless I knew it would be locked up perfectly tight and deep and could bend his arm 90 degree's the wrong way, otherwise punch him.

I'm decent at arm locks on both sides but tend to get the right arm, with fortunetely most people are right handed and woud stop them easier, I know I'd be screwed trying to fight most people with only my left.

As a matter of fact right now I've reached the perfect peace of mind.

My father is connected to a mechanical breather with tracheostomy, he's in our home now, and need 24/7 care from everyone of the family. He's diagnosticated with acute bladder disease, so things for him will get only worse.

I've already expressed to the doctors in hospital that in case of a new crisis from him, he will NOT be send to the hospital again.

I will take care personally of this. Myself and my guns if necessary.

                            He will die at home.

I'm trying to sold our shop or, at least to rent it in order to assure a future for my mother and sister.

Then, I will get finally my rest; the one granted by a 9mm between the ears.

                            Peace. Be happy.
