  • question about Ricco Chipperelli??

    Greetings,

i have recently picked up the latest issue of Grappling. I have seen the article on Frank Trigg and NHB.
Frank brings up Rico Chipperelli and his training with him. Does anyone have more info on Rico Chipperelli and his MA/wrestling background. I havent really found any good sources on his background. Any info will be appreciated.

Ricco is from Baltimore but lives in southern Cali now. He was an MSA state champion fo Mt St Joseph High School. He wrestled for Iowa in college for the legendary Dan Gable. Ricco was also the NCAA champion while wrestling for Iowa. He almost made the Olympic team losing to Dave Schultz(who was killed by Dupont) in the finals of the trials. He lost in OT to Schultz who went on to win Olympic Gold. Ricco also trains BJJ at Rigan's twice a week.

That is all I know. Maybe the RAW team web page has a more detailed bio on it. I apologize for any errors I made since this is off the top of my head.

      Greetings,

Thanks for the info. I tried to go the the site for the RAW team and it wasnt there. I was not aware that he is doing BJJ. From the article i was made aware of his wrestling background. It also brought up in that issue that Rico has not had a NHB match. What is your overall opinion of his skill level? I have heard that he has worked with several other NHB fighters. Any opinions/ thoughts

I've had the pleasure to train with Rico C., and watch him train some of the top dogs in NHB,MMA, and BJJ. To quote Rigan Machado, "Rico is the Rickson of wrestling".

Rico is an awesome teacher and motivator. I like his positive approach to teaching.

I had the opportunity to meet him and hang out with him for a couple of nights during an intensive grappling course that I took with Erik Paulson in Los Angeles. He is a nice guy that you couldn't even imagine stepping into an NHB event. It seems that he would better fit in modeling or acting in Hollywood; however, don't let appearances fool you. I know for a fact that he trains with Erik Paulson quite a bit at Boxing Works and assists Erik in teaching his Shootwrestling and Combat Submission Wrestling classes. I have a tape which Sensei Paulson sent me which features Ricco helping Erik with his class at Boxing Works. He definitely looks like he knows what he is doing.

            Greetings,

Sounds like he is a very good teacher. Ken Jeet, is this tape you talk about private footage or sold by some company. I would very much like to see some footage of mr Rico's work. Would you be interested in sharing it ( or not is your choice.) I know alan henderson( not with raw anymore) randy corture, and Tom erikson are raw members. Opinions on their skill level?

            Humbly yours

              Johnny,

The footage that I have of Rico is private footage. Actually, it is on the video of the intensive grappling session of Erik Paulson and I in Los Angeles. After shooting the video of Erik and I, Erik put in some little extras in the video like about an hour and a half of he and Rico teaching at Boxing Works. He did this on his own to show me some more stuff and sent it to me by mail when it was complete. Honestly, I don't know Rico enough to be showing the video to people. But I'll tell you what, he definitely looks like he knows his wrestling very well in addition to submissions.

Johndark- All the RAW team members are world class wrestlers. Rico probably would have won gold in the Olympics if he didn't lose to Schultz in OT in the finals of the trials. Schultz did win the gold.

                    Greetings,

Yes Ground Control, i agree with your points. From what I have seen from NHB fights with Corture and Henderson, they both have tremendous wrestling skill. I have seen one or two wrestling matches with Tom Erkison in them, but none in NHB. They make very good use of their skills in the NHB arena.
