u need speed, strength, technique and endurance in a fight as well as other things those are the main ones that come to mind. Strength/size is only one of the things, its important but its also important to realise its not all that matters.
I guess if size matters, then I have been wasting 17yrs.of my life doing martial arts since I'm fairly thin.
Sure doesn't feel like I have been wasting time though.I have no problem fighting guys bigger then me.I'm 175lbs to 180lbs depends on week and have won against guys 185-190lb guys,5 to 10 lbs can make a difference, but hasn't stopped me.
I usually fight in the 180 + divisions, and for a 6"2.5 guy 180lbs is not alot of weight.
These types of questions are silly and largely unaswerable.
BJJ purple belt vs. a College Football defensive lineman
How far apart are they? 10 feet? 30 feet? On the 20 yard line? Returning a punt? Are they on the street? in a Dojo, on a wrestling mat??
Does either have a surprise? If they are standing 10 feet apart and looking at eachother, bye bye Football player, no way they're gonna be able to tackle from that close and have it mean something, they'll probably just end up in a guillotine or guard.
If they are 30 feet apart and the Football player has the element of surprise, the BJJ guy is gonna be hurtin if he gets tackled from behind and taken down. But does a tackle always incapacitate someone? What does the Football player do then, go for a mount and then an Americana? Nope, he'll punch and flail like any other amateur while the BJJ guy, if conscious, will be working an escape and trying to land a sweep and get mounted.
Does the BJJ wear his Gi? Does the Football player wear his pads?
And if they are standing 10 feet apart, what does a FOOTBALL player do besides tackle? What if it's the placekicker? Or the Quarterback? Could a quarterback take a BJJ blue belt? Or are you only talking about Lineman?
If a big, mean football player doesn't get a chance to get a running start and tackle... what exactly are they gonna do besides flail about and punch and kick like an amateur???? And if a MMA dodged or wasn't taken out by a tackle, I don't see what a football player is gonna do besides fight like any other untrained "big guy".. (and alot of football players aren't even that big...)
How big are they?
How tall are they?
How OLD are they?
My brother was a College champion runningback, he was 5'8" and about 150 lbs, couln't be touched, he ran more yards than the whole team combined. Is he still a football player even though he isn't huge and gnarly? I guarantee you the colleges he played against would say HELL YES he's a "football player"
What about a friend of mine who is a Black Belt in Tang So Do and Judo who is 6'2" and 320 lbs, with a 800 pound squat AND deadlift and around a 380 benchpress? Is he a MMA guy, or does his size and strength make him a "football player" by default? There aren't alot of people *period* who have an 800 lb. deadlift.
Sure those are 2 non-typical examples - but this is a nontypical question.
There are no answers, only questions. Post your resulst when you get a football player and a MMA guy to agree to have a fight videotaped.
Otherwise, it's all conjecture and whimsical speculation.
So are you implying thin guys will never win competitions or even a real fight against guys bigger then them,if so then you are wrong.
I have won against guys much bigger then me,I have also seen small guys beat the shit out of huge steroid type monkey's that are bouncers in a club.
Tell Royce Gracie that size is important and I bet anything he will laugh, the guy is as thin as can be and still took on huge freaks.
hmm maybe u didn't read what i sed, i sed although size/strength is important its not the only important thing... i was partially agreeing with u. i myself am a skinny guy, many martial artists are skinny it even gives us some advantages in a fight i am just saying all other htings equal if strength was the only variable the bigger/stronger guy would most likely win

Judge me by my size, do you?
Yoda is right. Everyone thought he was just an old small green guy with big ears (no racism intended, I myself have green scaly skin). But it turns out he really can fight! Super agility, speed and accuracy. And if he uses the force you are gonna die.
Try to gain mount on me do you? Then use force I shall!
