  • Question for TracyKarate

Seriously, have you ever used your kenpo training (striking and grappling). I have trained with a few Kenpo guys and a few TKD guys who have all these nifty self defense moves and combinations.

I.e. Hit him low, he bends over, hit him in the head, the break his neck or do an eye strike.

Have you the occaision to use these in real life.

The reason I ask is that my instructor has used the techniques he has taught us in actual self defense (just some basic ones) on occaision. We don't script our attacks or our responses and from what I have seen of most traditional arts they do.

    Thanks,

    SZ

Actually, this is an open question for everyone on the forum:

Have you ever used the technique you were taught in class in a self defense situation?

To answer this myself, the answer is no. I haven't been in a self defensive situation since jr. high so I haven't used anything. I am not about to go looking for trouble just to see if these things work. I might run into Crazy Joe and get whupped. Or mushinmaster and get felt up.....

I have( and do) use the basic transportation and grappling techniques we learn in class in everyday life. I have also used them at the concerts I go to (Korn, Pantera, etc) and they are extrememly effective.

I've been training BJJ a couple years now and i've had to use it a couple times. I kept it real simple. I'm good enough with strikes to get their attention and I took em down, held position and ended one with an armbar from mount where theyr'e trying to roll you but I trapped his arm face down and popped it bad. Other time popped him a couple times in the face from mount and he turned over, rear choke. BJJ and some stand up make a pretty tough combo.

How did the two fights end? What were the outcomes?

The guy I choked went to sleep and my buddy pulled me off him and we got the hell out of there. Guy I armbarred screamed like he was dying when his arm broke so I pushed him away with my legs and got up ready to go some more but it was over. There was no way either of them could've kept fighting in my opinion.

Who started these fights? Were you acting out of instinct (i.e. repetition and familiarity) or were you able to remain calm and use "strategery"?

Sounds like you were prepared and acted successfully to defend yourself. Thanks for the input.

The guys that I fought had started trouble with me both times. Being a small guy people seem to like starting sh@#t with me. I'm pretty chill though so i'll always try to get out of it but if I feel like i'm in danger i'll defend myself. I wasn't really relaxed but I managed to control he situation.

You were lucky nobody jumped you from behind when you went to the ground. You should only fight on the ground when absolutely necessary. Was this fight outside?

                  TK,

Before you start critiquing the fight scenarios of others, please answer the questions that I have put foreward.

It has been my understanding that if one person wants the fight to go to the ground it's going to the ground. Especially if that one person is a grappling specialist.

                  Thanks,

                  SZ

Tracy, both times I was outdoors. One I didn't worry about anyone jumping in because I had a buddy of mine with me that I knew had my back. The other guy I took down knowing that his friends probably would jump in even though they just let us fight(and to his credit he didn't want anyone to jump in,even after I busted his arm). I figured if they were going to beat my ass at least I would make an impression. The dude that got his arm popped and me are cool now since I have to walk by that way to work everyday and those corner guys love me now. It was worth it even if I got beat down.

Kurt, I am glad you are well.

Szczepankiewicz, I do not respond if I am spoken to in a disrespectful tone. You do not order me around. I do not follow your orders. Is this understood.
Show me respect and I will show you the respect as well.

Tracey - read this carefully, then point out the disrespectfulness and the orders to me, 'cuz i don't see it. Szczepankiewicz is simply asking you a question, w/o trying to degrade your image on this forum, low as it is.

Why are you so worried about being respected? In your attempts to gain respect on this forum you have gained only dis-respect.

He is not asking this question to bash you - he does have a thing for crazyjoe, but they broke up.

I am interested in this forum too - have you ever used those nifty moves? We used to do them a lot at my old dojo, but I think they may be to complex to remember under stress. Comments?

                            TraceyKarate,
Oh wise and venerable sage, is it safe to say that you mean "I am not the boss of you!!!?"

The entire purpose of this thread was to ask you some questions without bashing you. However you refuse to respond even to the simplest questions I put forth.

INSTEAD of answering the question, or even attempting to address the issue, all you wanted to do was criticize someone else's technique.

All I wanted was to get some key information about Kenpo... all I got was your normal diatribe skirting the issue. Perhaps I am going about it the wrong way? Perhaps I am speaking with the lady as opposed to the pimp? Maybe then I can get some play??

That's Ok though. I know you are not of Kenpo, nor do you represent Kenpo. I know that Kenpo is not highly regarded on this forum, and I'll admit that I understand that. I just hope all the guys and gals on this forum realize that when they read your posts not to equate your "wisdom" with that of the true Kenpo artists.

You speak of Respect? Does that come in a bottle in your medicine cabinet stored between the Preparation H and your Vaginal Suppositories?

Enquiring minds could care less to tell you the truth....
