  • Let's keep it real now...Would you use Judo in the street? if yes..tell me how?

    1.) against a boxer..using judo...

    what would u do?

i took judo and i have to admit...some judo moves are great..like some of the throws..but that is if im not throwing blows to your head....thats if we are tangling up...

i seen some great judo moves but it has bjj in them...
most of the martial arts are combining so much that there isnt any one style..so i really cant say i dont like judo but i will say that i wont take judo again....

    not sport judo anyways....

jujitsu can be turned into street and can be used well im my opinion...so can wrestling...

but mixing judo, jiu jitsu, and boxing is even better...

    judo by itself is boring!!

Most judoka train exclusively in a gi. That would make it hard to translate to a fight. However, the hip throws, foot sweeps, and sacrifice throws can come in very handy. The hard core judo guys can easily throw novices in the sport, and should be able to throw most anybody who isn't expecting it.

Landing flat on your back, head or collarbone can quickly end a fight.

And in a street fight, these guys know better than to just come up and try to throw you. These throws are based on what your opponent gives you as much as where you take them.

A lot of the throws we use are very similar to basic judo throws, we use them without a gi. O Soto Gari is almost always a sure thing against a striker who let's you get close and overextends his punches.

In a self defense situation, where I am trying to escape, you bet I'd use Judo if the opportunity presented itself.

Like all MA instructors, my Judo Sensei was a little removed from reality when he stated that all you need is good judo and maybe 6 months of a striking art. Like CraxyJoe stated above, crosstraining is the key.

Doing one style and only one style leaves you with a gaping hole in your self defense training.

Exactly! Cross-training gives you the ability to sense these little opportunities presenting themselves where otherwise you would miss them. This goes for every style - you might even find an opportunity to use ballet if you cross-train!

Funniest thing I heard in a while, but you know what ballet is a great exercise it give you a lot of flexability and strenght plus ballet give you cardio...

Watch out I'm opening my first Ballet-Jitsu club and I really belive it will be the ultimate art of destruction

You'd have to be VERY careful using Judo in a fight. If you use any of the typical arm under the shoulder/around the back (sorry I don't know the terminology) you give up your back. Anybody with any grappling (and there are a lot of wrestlers out there) will just grab your waist and proceed to pummel you.

Judo in the street? Easy enough. Close to thai clinch, pound with knees, if they don't go down follow with a hip throw.

When I was in H.S. I had a Judo BB budy that was pretty competitive in Tourneys. He didn't look like much but some big thug took a swing at him after class and my judo friend ducked under the punch, got inside and executed a perfect throw. The thug dude knowing nothing about how to fall broke his leg (the big bone whatever thats called) and his knee landing hard on the cement. My judo budy stayed on him and was pounding him in the ribs while trapping the dudes arms until security broke it up. The dude that took the swing at my friend was in a full leg cast for almost 4 months! Yep, I would have to say that Judo is pretty effective IMO.

I know what you mean. I wouldn't feel comfortable using it either on the streets seeing that I am nowhere near as good as my buddy was at Judo. I was just saying that it does have it's place in fighting if the Judo player is good enough. I'm been into BJJ for the last few years and I think it's easier to apply in real life situations but like you said Joe - Judo, BJJ, and Boxing is the way to go.

From what I've heard, Judo guys are some of the toughest stand-up grappling bastards in the world. They have great balance, which is essential to a fight - and they are hard to move! I think that MT-good karate, then Judo, then BJJ that's the way to go (Striking, Stand-up, Ground)

I've heard nothing but good stuff from Judo, but I would practice w/o a gi preferably.

O-soto-gari is a great throw - I've been learning it for quite some time now, lol....grappling doesn't come easy to me

I'd split kali up - and train with the dog brothers for stick fighting

any ideas on knife fighting schools??

                            Ballet => Dog Brothers

There is a Dog Brother's stick knight at a school here in town (Houston). I plan to check it out.

And ballet is excellent for conditioning BTW. I danced with a ballet company in HS for a couple of years. I started after football and quit just before going to Parris Island. Ballet was probably the best condition I have been in.
