  • What is a blackbelt?

This question has always bothered me because it really does vary from art to art. Some Karate styles will give BB in as little as a year or two, while BJJ ususally takes 8-15 years.

What is your personal definition of a BB?

Mine: The ability to defend yourself (striking and grappling) against one unarmed opponent of equal size or slightly greater. If you can achieve that, I would consider you a BB in martial arts regardless of style.

With that definition, of course, people like Tank Abbott fit into that level. Hmmm....

    Later.

Black belt.... i bjj takes long time

japanese jj take about a good 4-5 years...

bjj has high standards and is very hard training..with some much to learn

it aint like no karate bullshit belt or t-kwan-do..they'lll give anyone a belt...

i seen the teachings of other schools and they do it for the money...

in BJJ if you didnt earn it you aint getting it....

It truly does show ignorance to make a general comment about Tae Kwon Do like that. We do not give Black Belts to just anyone, it takes serious dedication and very hard work. My association is a very good one and we produce a lot of national champs, so please keep coments like that to yourself. I'm 20 and I have been involved for alost 14 years, and a currently a 2nd don black belt.

        Verona:
Do you ever think about what you are doing and why you are doing it? If you like TKD, then don't, b/c you will quickly be converted to MMA

As for belts in general, I agree with my main man JOHNNY: no belts and no bs.

What do you need a belt for, other than to hold your pants up?

If there is any belt system, IMHO, it should be

        WHITE = BEGINNER

        INTERMIDIATE COLOR = REGULAR STUDENT

BLACK = INSTRUCTOR, TEACHER, SENSEI, SIFU, ETC

That means that a black belt is the culmination of years upon years upon years of study day in and day out, so that you not only know what movements you should know, but you know why you need to know those movements, how to use those movements instinctivly, and just know everything there is to know about encounters, stand - up and on the ground. AND be able to teach this knowledge to other people....my $.02

For BJJ belt rank is determined by how well you do against others bjj players. If you can role and beat black belts consistently, using bjj techniques and movement than you are a black belt. If you beat purples you’re purple.
I think a person with 6 months to a year of boxing and bjj could defend themselves pretty well against most people, but would not be anywhere near Black Belt level.

Blackbelt, in our art, means "master of the basics" you know all the fundamentals or our art and you know them very well. Doesn't mean anything other than that. It's rare that we train with gis or belts, unless it's winter time. See, we train in an uninsulated, poorly heated dojo.

To us it means your finally ready to start learning.

Belts are over-rated. I've done BJJ for 8 months and I don't have a single stripe. I've missed some promotions due to midterms and papers and such, but to be honest I don't care about my belt.
It's rather satisfying knowing that when someone sees my belt, they think I'm a newbie to MA. (A newbie who has trained in Karate, Judo, BJJ, and TKD). Boy are they wrong hehe.

I've been doing bjj for 2 months and i tap out 2-3 times in a 5 minute wrestle. When will I submit my first victim ?
I feel sorry for the poor bastard I submit for the first time. I'm gonna keep the position for a couple of minutes.

Roll with non-grapplers! It's great for the ego. I used to trade guitar lessons for 1 hour privates with my instructors. We would spar for the hour, with 15 minute rounds. I wouldn't get any breaks, but the instructors would switch off. I never did get them to submit, but I considered it a victory when I was able to escape from inferior position. After a month or so of this, when I rolled with some of the other novcies I was able to dominate. Try not to get carried away with the sadism though.

BJJ Novice, I was at the same stage as you a couple months ago (get tapped out a couple times each round). Now, it's maybe once a night, if that. When you're beginning, there's just one thing to remember, and that's to learn from your mistakes.

It's ok to be submitted, but just don't make the same mistake over and over again. If there's one technique that is killing you, ask the instructor for the counter.

Just got back from training and I'm proud to say that I got my first sub. It was a triangle choke I learnt on the net and from the bjj tapes I bought. I kept it there for about 1-2min releasing his head for a while then pulling it towards me again them releasing and so on.

Hmmmmm...crazyjoe, you are very funny. High kicks are just a minute part of the art of tae kwon do - we cover some pretty brutal knees, elbows, low kicks, chokes, etc. in my school - and there is no ginving away of belts. Sounds like you are referring to the "McDojo's".

We even learned some basic BJJ in my tkd class - that's what got me started in jiu-jitsu
