  • passing the guard

hello i'm new here and i've been training in martial arts for about 10yrs. For the past 2yrs i've been training in Gjj and i was wondering if anyone could tell me (or give me some web-sites) some effective ways to pass the guard. I know the 'one leg up, one elbow on the inner-thig' one, but this one has never really been effective for me. Either the other person just grabs me and pulls me down, or they grab the leg and try to sweep me.
    thanks a bunch

Pay attention to the small details when learning various ways to pass the guard. When with the instructor ask, ask and ask exactly what he is doing. I have seen over a long period that it is not the "big" movements that help, but all the "little" ones...good luck

      Pass The Guard

The Severn Combat System philosophy believes that the BJJ world is obsessed with the concept of passing the guard. When in fact, numerous submissions are readily available while your opponent has you in the guard. Why pass it if you can submit from in it?? In addition, many practioners of BJJ will have a false sense of security while they have you in their guard, and will often times not be expecting a direct submission attack. Not to take away from the value of the guard for the best available option from the bottom, we are just presenting some effective options to the concept of the pass.

        passing the guard

        A.

        1. Get good upright posture, grab the groin area with both hands and push down hard so he can't move the hips.

        2. Place one knee right in the middle of his butt so he can't move toward you and push back with other leg till you break the guard
        ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        B.

        1. Stand up straight, lifting him with you

        2. Hammer and push one knee until he falls
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        C. Vale Tudo

        1. Stand up and bend over

        2. Then start punching him hard in the face. You have the advantage of your full body weight. After the second or third punch he will let go.

I anyone wants to add something please do so

Severn-combat, what are some examples of submissions from within someones guard? I've been doing submission wrestling for many years and I've rarely seen this happen. I do know it's possible, but I think it's unlikely to happen often to anyone who's not a novice.

            submissions in the guard

i've only seen one submission from the guard (the person in the guard, not not person 'giving' the guard) and that was basically a neck crank that (i think) gary goodridge did while he was in someones guard.
I've had several expeirnced wrestlers with judo/submission skills try to submit me from my guard and so far, they failed. I remember a 300lb guy trying to get me in a shoulder-key-lock while he was in my guard and all i did was bridge my hips and he had no leverage to submit me. So if you know anyways to submit an opponet without passing the guard, please tell me because i'm very curious to know how.
and as for dan severen......well, just ask him how hard it is to submit an opponett from the guard when that guy wraps a nice triangle choke against ya (errr ummm royce).

I only know two ways to submit while you're in guard.

              1. Can Opener Neck Crank. Pretty simple. Just cup both hands behind your opponents head and pull up til he taps.

              2. Judo Type-Choke. This one only works against newbies, or if you're opponent is trying to gi-choke you. Basically, just grab one side of the collar of his gi with your corresponding hand. (Use your left arm on HIS right collar or vice-versa). You then proceed to bring the collar across the throat and just press down. Be very, VERY, careful doing this, you're opponent will surely go for an arm-lock from the guard. However, if he's a newb and you end up pinning him and locking on this simple choke, it's over.

if you're in the guard, try of an heel hook. Reach an arm back and then get your elbow around their heel while pulling up to your arm pit. Then pull on your arm twisting his heel. It's worth a shot. Or go for an ankle lock

passing the guard - instead of going around, go through his legs. It's about the only two basic options to get a better position. If he is grabbing your leg as you are trying to pass, then grab the leg that you're trying to pass and pull that leg back (that he's trying to grab) and at the same time pull his other leg down to where it's flat on the ground. Then put your shin over his inside thigh that you have down and swing the other leg around (while still trapping his other leg with your hand, and the other hand on his coller so he can't move). Then get in side control.

on bjjnovice's post A, I would like to add that when pushing down, do so with your elbows on their pressure point on the inside of their thigh. This causes a great deal of pain.

It's important to learn passing the guard because bjj is a sport and when you compete you need to know how to score points. Those subs from inside someone's guard only work on people weaker than you or newbies. If you're wearing a gi in a good sport bjj player's guard you have to keep busy and keep him busy otherwise he'll tap you or sweep you.

                        Alternative to passing guard

                        Ankle locks!
                        If they're allowed!

Grab his balls. Squeeze. Punching works too.
