  • Real Fighting

One of the posts I have read recently mentioned the phrase "real fighting." What exactly is real fighting?

Is it street altercations? Bar fights? NHB competitions? Police confrontations?

We always talk about this being better than that in a "real fight."
I also hear that NHB is the closest thing to a real fight. This subject is very interesting for me and I would like to hear everyone's opinions.

I would define a real fight as being one that happens anywhere, without any rules. In other words either a street fight, bar fight, etc. Where anything can happen.

          Reality Check

All the other posts are right. No rules, no stopping, no mercy. Your opponent has no respect for you and is looking to seriously lay the hurt on you. You cannot throw in the towel and no one can stop the beating. That's reality.

If someone is holding you in their guard for their buddy to hit you with a baseball bat, rip his ear off. Bite, poke eyes, grab balls, break knees. That's reality when you are in danger.

Of course, you have options and you're not going to do this to the drunk guy who's an idiot at the bar. My instructor always tells us that we're being nice if we break someone because back in the day, they would probably would have been killed.

NHB Competitions are sports! Great competitors, great athletes but none of them is going to poke anothers eye out to get them to release a lock.

yep. release the lock, rip off the offending finger, then proceed to beat the wielder of said finger to death.

              Real Fight?

Unpredictable. Best to avoid it if possible. You never know if you'll survive or not.

If I've got you in an armbar and you poke my eye, or grab my balls

I'm gonna break your arm ( in 1/3 of a second ) before I move away

Guys, I don't have a problem with grappling, I've done it myself for a couple years. It is absolutely necessary to know your way around but I don't think its the FIRST thing you should look for in a street situation, that's all. If locks, come up.....take them. I love the line "most fights end up on the ground". Yeah, and most fights are not one on one either. If that's the case, bad news going to the ground.

I've been in that situation. There were 3 people I was talking to, one guy took a swing at me (I had no idea it was even a fight at this point), clocked me and I grabbed him. We went to the ground and I mounted him. As I could have done anything I wanted, his buddy grabbed me by the throat and the other was behind me. I jumped up and thought it best to leave well enough alone. Granted, if I didn't know grappling, I would have gotten a beating. But if that's all I knew, it would have been bad to initially go for a take down (assuming I wanted to fight initially). Just an example.....even if you think its one on one, you never know where his buddies are.

But in the altercation which you described grappling is ALL you used to get out of a life threatning situation

We went to the ground and I mounted him. As I could have done anything I wanted
If you didn't know grappling how would you have known what the mount position is let alone that it's the dominant position, and more importantly how would you know how to get into the mount position from a takedown

But if that's all I knew, it would have been bad to initially go for a take down
But that's all you used to counter ( or force ) the takedown, get in the mount position, then get up and run without getting a scratch

Because three on one = hospital

I agree....everyone should know grappling. I do and it got me out of situations like I described. If you don't, you limit yourself. At the same time, people should not limit themselves to only ground fighting, especially if they want to be effective in real streeet fight situations.

This all started from a comment I made about NHB competitions not being real street fighting, where you are in REAL danger. Face it, its not. I didn't mean to piss off grapplers or get into a "what's better - grappling/striking" controversy. Its ALL good. I love them both.

if you can keep it on standing it's good...

Everyone..should have or practice having a Knock Out Punch...

Grappling is excellent for one vs one

                        not you vs them...

you will get a bottle busted over your head or anything else for that matter..

Wow we all agree that you have to be able to fight on your feet and on the ground. We all agree that fighting Multiple opponents is a generally losing battle.

                              Boy am I getting bored...

Would somebody please say that they think practicing forms and harnessing your chi is a superior form of training...Doesn't anybody want to post something like "no one can take me to the ground."

That's it I'm signing on under a different screen name so I can post that Grappling is BS because all you have to so is rip the guys ear off, and that the best way to train is by practicing eye gouges and ear grabs in the air. Call it the eye gouge/ear grab form.
