  • Sperry -- Submissions Grappling

Has anyone purchased this set? I've read the Bill lewis reviews and it sounds pretty good and I'm thinking of buying it.

The video clips on groundfighter only touch the surface, but its my understanding its mostly legs and knee locks. Also a lot of emphasis on submission, not on passing guard.

I would love to hear details.

    Hi

The series is really good. I don't know if you have seen any of Mario's other tapes, but they are some of the best out there.
His tapes differ from most in that they are all connected, he does not show moves (techniques) in isolation, but rather, as an overall game plan.

In this series, he shows some great guard passes, submissions, butterfly guard work, sweeps, and explains the points and strategy of submission wrestling.

If you are into No-Gi wrestling, I highly recommend this series. I also highly, highly recommend Tony Cecchines Lost art of Hooking series, and Erik Paulson's material.

    Good luck

I really liked Choke. It has some fighting in it, shows Rickson rolling, Royler is in it, and the now famous Todd Hayes. You can usually find this video pretty cheap, it's worth watching.

          Sperry

Thanks for the feedback guys. I wanted to know if Secrets of Submission Grappling contains a lot of upper body submissions as well, especially straight arm bar. From what I've ready its mainly lower body submissions, which is fine with me, but I'd like the basics in my techniques as well, like armbars, sleeper etc

Also I am crazy about the baiting game, and it seems like Sperry does touch on this in terms of passing guard etc. It would be fantastic to have a system that covers this type of game.

I have read the reviews of the Master Series and know that Sperry's style is to link moves together, and am really interested in how good a job he does doing this on the Submission tapes. In any case no -gi is my game. And I'd like more feedback. The price though is kinda Steep at $200 US.

I know what you mean by price. Instructionals are not cheap, and I've kinda started collecting them as a hobby.

The Sperry submission tapes do show a lot of set ups and 'do this' if your opponent 'does this.' He works the 'key lock' a lot, some neat neck crank/chokes, basic leg locks and knee bars. I like the guard passing tape.

For armbars, Roy Harris has two very good armbar tapes out. These go on sale for 19.95 every now and then. Very good tapes.

There is a series called The Practical Grappler. This is a submission wrestling syllabus and covers tons and tons of ground work. You can get this three tape set at mixedmartialarts.com (click on members offers$) for about a hundred bucks. This is really good.

Eric Paulsons Combat submission wrestling seminar tapes (2000) are so full of techniques and set ups it would be impossible to print it all.

I really like Catch style wrestling. Paulson's tapes and Cecchines are just awesome. Erik has a ton of cool tapes and will improve your game a lot (he shows so many entries into submissions)

Bas Rutten's Extreme Pancrase series (from Century Martial Arts) is awesome. It includes two of the best stand-up tapes, as well as, great submission tapes.

In regards to the Sperry tapes, his grappling speaks for itself. The tape set is geared for point style submission wrestling. He not only discusses submissions, but stresses winning by points as well. One of the tapes is dedicated to scoring points.
If you are a gym wrestler (don't compete) some of this stuff might not be too applicable. However, there is so much other stuff on these tapes, they are worth the money. World Martial Arts is a class organization and so is Paul Viele. You should e-mail him, he will help you with your decision.

Please don't hesitate to reply to this with more questions. I will be glad to help.

              Sperry Submission Grappling

Can you list all the submissions Sperry shows in this series:

              so far we have:
              Keylock,
              Ankle Lock
              Knee Bar
              Neck Crank

What other submissions does he show? I'm very much interested in the typical juijitsu submissions as well.
I need to know all this before I lay out the cash.

              Thanks for the tips

Secrets of Submission Grappling is not really a submission oriented tape set. He does show submissions (leg locks, key locks, neck cranks/chokes, and triangle set up, and a couple arm locks), but it's the strategy in how to get these submissions that make this a good tape set.

He does not go into the mechanics of the submissions, so these tapes are not for a beginner. This is a great tape set for submission grappling. The price is steep though. However, it's cheaper than a lot of seminars, or travelling to train with someone of his caliber. I watch these tapes a lot. I highly recommend them.

If you want submissions, get Erik Paulson's tapes. I mean these things are unbelievable. He has tapes on leg locks, triangle chokes, arm locks, etc. On one of the tapes I have, CSW 2000, he shows 30 arm locks from side mount.

He shows leg locks that will have your training partners baffled.
Erik shows awesome entries into submission holds, some pretty flashy, but easy to pull off.

I will watch some of the Sperry tapes again. I will look for any other submissions that I did not list.

Have you seen any of Matt Thornton's tapes. I was thinking about getting these, I hear they are great.

                  sub wrestler,

I have Matt's first and second tape set. I really like both of them. The first set is more demonstrational than instructional in my opinion.
The second tape series is one of my favorite tape sets (and I have lots of tapes). I really consider it a "best of" tape set. What I mean by that is the material covered on these tapes is found on almost every other tape series on the market, but not all in one place. That is why I often pop these tapes in when I wish to review a topic. The only downside to these tapes are the interviews that they put in between cuts. Overall, I consider them a great buy.

                      Sperry

Sub Wrestler: I understand what you mean when you say Sperry's tapes are more focused on the web of technique all interconnected.

I myself am not comfortable with knee bars and ankle locks (meaning I hardly train them) so I hope i'd be able to at least see the basic execution of them when he demonstrates.

Still I would appreciate a complete list of submissions (I know he doesn't show a lot but I'd like them listed) he shows on the tapes. What chokes on particular does he show?

                      Thanks

For an understanding of leglocks, I suggest getting Tony Lopez's leg lock tape from Century Martial Arts. Very detailed.

Roy Harris's leg lock tape is probably awesome.

I hear Vince Fields has a great leg lock tape.

It would be hard to list all the subs Sperry shows in the videos. The tapes aren't broke down into Technique 1, technique 2. The tapes flow like a movie. Sperry starts talking and demonstrating and goes from there.

Sperry shows high percentage submissions, subs that should be available every time you wrestle. He just doesn't teach how to do the submission. I will have to rewatch the tape series to be able to give you a more complete list of submissions. Sorry I can't do them now.

Sperry shows the 'arm triangle choke a lot' This is similiar to the triangle choke with your legs, but you are using your arms instead. He sets this up from side control. He also shows crucifix type neck cranks.

Have you considered Tony Cecchine's series. He has tapes on body control, arm attacks, neck cranks, leg locks. These tapes are more technique oriented, but have the overall philosophy of making your opponent as uncomfortable as possible. This series is the same price as Sperry's, but you get 10 tapes instead of 6.

If you tell me about your sub wrestling experience, how long you have sub wrestled etc, I might be able to help you more in regards to what tapes would be of benefit.

                          Sub Wrestler:

I'm really interested in the Sperry Series. If it contains a lot of high percentage moves I'll be happen enough with the technique portion. What I really want is the tricks to get those techniues on and as I understand Mario Specializes in that area.

Just one question. From watching the video clip on groundfighter.com he demonstrates guard to kneebar/ankle lock but the clip just shows him stand up and then grab a foot and say "From here's he is done". I hope he doesn't do this throughout the tape set . I mean i know the setup is the most important but I'd like to see him actually execute the submissions.

Thanks for all your help. I've check out Tony C, clips too and they look good but I don't think they flow as well as Sperry's.

                            Attn Sub Wrestler

I'll be passing on Sperry's Sub Grappling tapes. I like the facts that he connects move, but the submissions he shows are not the basics. I mean modified gullotine, leg locks, and spinals are a good foundation.

I'm looking for a series of interlocking moves connected like a web but with the basic submissions (armbar, triangles, etc etc). I also prefer no gi. Do you have any suggestions?

                              Hi

The 'Practical Grappler' is a 3 tape set that specifically addresses 'no gi' submission wrestling. I think it costs a little over $100 from mixedmartialarts.com.. or www.practicalgrappler.com.

It has everything for submission wrestling (except takedowns)....solo drills, escapes, positional control, submissions, guard passes, etc. While this isn't a well known tape series, I am very impressed with it. It has set-ups into submissions.

I think my all time favorite though is Erik Paulson. He tapes are out of this world when it comes to submissions and flow drills. He has two new tapes are triangle chokes that are very good. His leg lock tapes are great. On his CSW 2000 seminar tape (combat submission wrestling), he shows over two hours of submission wrestling ground flows, submissions, clinch work, and just cool stuff. There is so much on this tape set it would be impossible to list everything.

For tapes that go into extreme detail, get Roy Harris's. He teaches submissions, escapes, etc with explicit detail. His tapes go on sale for $20 which is a steal. They are as high as production quality as you will find.

I guess Matt Thorntons are awesome, some say even better than Sperry's.

How long have you been doing submission wrestling and what is your training like now? I might be able to help you more if I understand where you are at right now.

                              Good luck,
