actually, while the muay thai fighter DOES leave his stomach open in his stance, this is not too much of a problem. I've fought Muay Thai fighters in NHB competions and one thing i've learned is PROTECT YOUR HEAD. I've had my nose broken 4 times total (3 from muay thai fighters). ANd muay thai fighters are usually SO well conditioned that a hard step side kick to the stomach doesn't even make them blink (been there, done that). One time i kicked muay thai fighter so hard in the stomach that he flew across the ring. He just smiled and waited till a threw a 2nd kick then swept me.
After fighting a couple of muay thai fighters, i adopted their stance because it also allows a good chance to graple. (i've wrestled for 9yrs and i've been learning Bjj in the past few months)
