    Steve Maxwell dumps Relson Gracie
« on: Today at 10:38pm » Quote Modify

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Less than 6 months after becoming Relson Gracie's first American Black Belt, Steve Maxwell has decided to leave the Relson Gracie training association and become his own entity, Maxercise. Loyalty is something that was once preached in our gym, where is it now? Why would you accept a belt from a man when you are considering leaving him? Has the belt become bigger than the man?

When you walked into the doors of the Relson Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy East, you could feel the intensity as soon as you hit the mat. This is the case no longer, the team has had their leader removed with no obvious reason or explanation. No announcement was made, the Relson Gracie signs just came down.

What is your opinion on this? Are we wrong to feel betrayed? What would you do in this situation?

    Respectfully yours,
    "The unknown soldier"

Obviously you train at Maxercise has the level of instruction changed in your opinion? Someone said he has gone from selfdefense focus to a more tournament focus.

I no longer train at maxercise, this post was copied from NHBGEAR forum (i was not the originator). I brought it here becasue i know there has been some interest and debate on the topic of maxercise.

          I had a feeling.....

This is seemingly becoming a new trend amongst the americans. Get your rank and book. And people wander why the Brazilian instructors are "slow" or "cautious" about who they promote. Do you blame them. They instill their technique and trust upon you and you milk them for your own personal gains with no thought about allegance or dedication (not fanaticism ...but allegance none the less). I hope Maxercise survives this and they probably will... but this just leaves a bad taste.

gjjarmbar, is the Relson situation the reason you left or was it something unrelated? Where are you training now?

              unrelated reason.

I train primarily with friends who still train at maxercise, on mondays i train in Bryh Mawr Pa at High level fitness, Thursdays Champion martial arts in Maple Shade NJ and Sun in what we playfully call the Chicken Coop (converted into a gym) in Dorothy NJ.

Marco... Is Champion JP's place... and should High Level Fitness be included on the Schools page of my MMA in PA web site??

This whole situation kind of reminds me when some of Carlson's team (Vitor, Sperry) turned their backs on him and formed the Brazilian Top Team.

Joe, Champion is Joe Priole's place. High Level for right now is a group of friends who get together and train, nothing formal, i will advise the owner of the possibilty of being added to your list.

                          Gjjarmbar -

Where is the Chicken Coop located? Dorothy NJ? I've never heard of it......And can anyone come and train, or is this just for a small club or group?

Yeah, but Mario and co. left Carlson it was something that had been festering for years and the guys who left definitely had a beef with their situation.
Maxwell's situation sounds more like business reasons.
