I really don't follow boxing and don't know that much, but I do watch the occasional boxing match and from what I saw, Tyson's skills were very poor, his strategy looked to be just to try to knock out Golota. It seems that he was always trying to swing to hit the home run, a knock out punch. Hey, the best way to win, is of course, knock out your opponent, but there are smart strategies to setups.

Tyson is past his prime to be a great boxer. But he is still awesome and many dudes would love to have his current skills right now, but he isn't anywhere near the same boxer anymore. What little brain/smarts/strategy he had, he seems not to use it now.

There's speculation whether or not he is going to retire. I think he might.............for a while, but his ego will lure him back into the ring for "one more shot" many times until people won't want to pay money to see him.

Anyone who saw that fight can see that Golota needs help. He obviously has some psychiatric problems that need to be addressed. That is not the first time he has done that.

This may not impress you tough guys, but Golota was later treated for a concussion, apparently from Tyson's head-butt.

So Tyson's cheapness and disorientation may have affected Golota's judgment.

Not that I feel sorry for his nut-punching ass.

Yeah he got hurt from the head butt, not the repeated shots to the head he took in those two rounds. Give me a break. Tyson did nothing illegal in this fight. Actually he was rather composed. Golota's psychiatric problems were there long before he fought Tyson. Ask Lennox Lewis and Michael Grant. He quit on both of them also.

                      Gents,

I just added a thread about this, but here it is again.

The latest medical news on Golota. After reading this, I can sure see why he 'quit.' WOuld anyone of us done better?!

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Heavyweight Andrew Golota, who quit against Mike Tyson after the second round of their fight early Saturday morning, suffered a concussion, a herniated disc in his neck and a fractured cheek bone, his doctor said on Sunday.

The extent of the injuries indicate that Golota was right to quit the bout, Dr. Wesley Yapor told reporters on a teleconference call from Chicago.

Golota, who refused to come out for the third round of the scheduled 10-round fight, was hospitalized on Saturday after complaining of headaches and nausea. He was still in the hospital on Sunday and was expected to stay there for a couple of days.

A spokesman for Golota's promoter, Main Events, originally said that Golota had bleeding on the brain and a fractured orbital bone. Yapor said the bone around the eye was not fractured and that two dark spots in an X-ray were determined to be scar tissue.

He also said that Golota, who had been knocked down with a strong punch in the first round of the fight in Auburn Hills, Michigan, had numbness in his left arm and left side.

Yapor said Golota has a herniated disc between the fourth and fifth vertebrae in his neck. Yapor said he would wait several weeks for tissue swelling to subside to determine if the Polish fighter needed surgery.

Yapor said the assumption is that he likely sustained the injuries in the first round of the bout. He added that a concussion can affect a person's ability to think and protect himself.

Golota also complained after the aborted fight of being head-butted by Tyson.

                      DID THE RIGHT THING

"I think Mr. Golota did the right thing (in quitting). There is no question he sustained head injuries from head blows," Yapor said. Golota "could have been paralyzed" had he continued, Yapor said.

Golota, a national hero in Poland and in Polish communities in America, was excoriated by fans and the media for quitting the fight when it did not initially appear that he had been severely injured. When he left the ring, fans jeered him and threw cups of beer on him as he walked through the aisles toward his dressing room.

The neurologist also said that when Golota checked into Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago on Saturday he told the emergency room doctor that he had double vision after Tyson had knocked him down in the first round.

"He said he had double vision and wasn't sure which image he should hit," said Yapor, adding that had he been ringside and knew then what he knows now he would have stopped the fight. "There is no way I would have allowed him to proceed in the second round," Yapor said.

But he made a point to say that he was not criticizing the ringside physician at the fight in Auburn Hills, a suburb of Detroit. He said that unless Golota had told the ringside physician of his symptoms there would be no way to suspect their extent.

                        QUIT ON LEWIS ?

GroundControl - Okay, he's quit on Tyson, and Grant (even though in the 10th, Grant did catch him with good shots before he quit - I have to watch that one again), but to say he quit against Lewis? He didn't even have a chance to throw a punch against Lewis. Lewis was ALL OVER HIM. Lewis hit him with everything but the kitchen sink. Even though afterwards, it was said that Golota had taken some form of medication (prior to the fight), he didn't quit because he wanted to hurry and get back to Warsaw fast - the ref stepped in and stop him from any further punishment. Watch it again.

                        Ronnie.

Thanks EasyE, that really sheds light on what really happened to Golota.

                          Ronnie.

rockinronnie- you watch the tape again and look at the look on Golota's face. Lennox caught him early and Golota panicked and stayed down in the first round. Any fight where Golota was put on the canvas he had a mental breakdown. Bowe- Low blows despite being well ahead.Lennox- he stayed down for the count. Grant- despite whipping Grant's ass he refused to fight after being knocked down. Tyson- you saw what happened.

I am not trying to take anything away from Lennox but if Golota didn't have a "heart" problem Lennox would have had to earn his victory.

GroundControl - I agree with them all except for the Lewis fight. Your right when you say if Golota had of had more of a "heart", he might have given Lewis more of a go (actually, had Golota not taken whatever medication it was he took prior to the fight, he might have done beter), but the look on his face was IMO, a look of just taking a barrage of punches, and his brain was so shaken up, what other expression would one expect from just a thrashing? He was just out-gunned from the get go in that fight. After he ate the first straight right, he was never the same. Then came more, and by that time Golota was in the corner slouching into the ropes. That's when the ref stepped in to stop it.

By the way, everytime I look at your name I think of that Bowie song....."....ground control to Major Tom...."

                              Ronnie.

Actually I took the name from Sean Alvarez bjj team. Sean and I are training partners and the name sounded cool. I liked it because it is what we do , take our opponents to the GROUND and CONTROL them.
