  • what to take in addition to bjj

I posted a couple of kenpo questions not too long ago. This one is similar. Ive been in Martial Arts for just over a year now. My first instructor trained me in his garage with a combination of styles. (bjj, kickboxing, judo, japanese juijutsu) I think what I dug the most was the kickboxing and the bjj. However he moved and now Im on the hunt. While kickboxing and bjj were his favorites also, he emphsized the importance of being well rounded. Im pretty aware that most schools or styles for that matter dont train that well rounded, Im curious as to what would complement bjj. Ive been in Kenpo for a little while and we also use some boxing drills and Wing Chun as well. However, Im not a huge fan of forms or pre set self defense techniques. I was consifering Muay Thai as there is a great school near me, but my interests arent just ring stuff. In fact not at all. My goal is for self defense. But Im also realistic in that "self defense" doesnt always = a good fighter. Plus, Muay Thai has rules. Dont get me wrong Im not knocking it. I see its absolute power and benifits. I guess what Im trying to ask here is what stand up style would even the most die hard bjj fan suggest for self defense? (crowded bar, no rules, soccer riot, etc)
    Thanks in advance.

    Have you considered....?

    Cfr,

Have you looked into Paul Vunak's system, or Tony Blauer? Pretty interesting stuff. I have several of Vunak's tapes(the Street Safe ones) and I enjoy them immensely. Both systems seem pretty realistic.

Muay thai would be an excellent choice to supplement your BJJ training. Ya, Vunak is pretty awesome. I've seen some of his tapes and he seems to know just about everything! No sarcasm intended.

If I were in your shoes, I would seriously look at Muay Thai and Krav Maga.

Why are you training? What purpose does it serve for you?

Something that I have not encounterd in the world of Commercial Martial Arts is firearms training.

I'd like to see or set up something like that. I wonder what that would entail....

You should take Filipino Martial Arts in addition to your BJJ.

This is a good idea because it will teach you that when you use the guard in the street against a Filipino Martial Artisit, they will stab you with a knife in your inner thigh which may result in your death.

Ok. Should we all take ninjitsu so we can disappear when some dude in black tights throws a shurikan at us?

Should I take kendo to learn how to poke someone's eyes through masks?

You guys can take ninjutsu and kendo if you really like to. I'm sure they will have a good manoeuver in there that you can use.

But it's not that common for people to carry a shuriken or to wear a kendo mask.

We tried to use the knife disarm that Rorion Gracie teaches in his Street tape, and it was effective against a guy with a knife who doesn't know how to use a knife.

When we used our FMA technique against BJJ, sorry but BJJ always lose because BJJ is close range fighting and FMA knife is close range and is designed specifically to kill BJJ type of style.

Now BJJ vs Empty hand is effective, but when there is knife like always on the street BJJ better use footwork and run away
just like when there is gun knife better run away

Let me get this straight: A trained knife fighter has an advantage over grapplers?

                        Jaredextreme and mushinmaster,
Not only is your sarcasm worthy of shi t, but both you guys are missing the point!

So typical of many BJJ guys. They Always go to the ground before checking to if there's any glass.

Only idiotic morons would think I did not know that you did not know, that a trained knife will kill grappler. That's so obvious!

You see, when I stabbed that BJJ guy, I told him I didn't want to fight. But he insisted because he knew Jujutsu, and of course it will make you confident becasue of it's effectiveness.

So he didn't consider that maybe I have concealed butterfly knife. And he insist that we fight. I tell him no, I don't want to fight!
Then he calls me pussy and kicks me! He did that kick to my shin! So I spit on his hair!
And then he came in for a take down, and then I stabbed that ****er so hard in his shoulder and he screamed in pain.

And then I laughed at the guy because he wants to fight and I told him I don't like to fight with Jujutsu guy because I like Royce Gracie!

Take freestyle wrestling to compliment your bjj.

Take one or more of the following arts in particular, all arts are good but these are the ones I reccomend.

                            JKD
                            Muay Thai
                            Krav Manga
                            Boxing
                            Kickboxing
                            Wing Chun/Tsun
                            Wrestling

                            Hope this helped.

I'll agree with Fighter and RockinRonnie! Let me add that you need to find what works for you. Try a bunch of styles and see what you like. Every martial art has some merit! Good luck!
