hi,
what does everyone here think of wing chun? do you think it's good for self defense or do you think it sucks? what if a GOOD wing chun practioner fought a GOOD BJJ or muay thai?

and just as a sidenote, i don't take wing chun.

Wing Chun

Wing Chun is good. It is an effective style invented by a woman (I think Yim Wing Chun) so she could beat a man. Its good but needs refining.

As for Wing Chun. If an = Wing Chun practiioner fought an = Muay Thai or BJJ I think it may lose. But thats just my opinion.

If your after a good MA JKD is the best.

Wing Chun is practical and great for fighting. It has kicks, punches, palms, elbows, knees, some joint manipulation, and trapping. I think it would be great to mix it with a ground fighting art. Muay Thai with a ground fighting art would also be great. As for art vs. art, I don't think thats a valid argument. If you take two fighters of equal skill and different arts, you cant say who's gonna win. Each fighter fights differently.

P.S. It was Ng Mui who developed Wing Chun, Yim Wing Chun further refined it.

I think the art does matter a bit, but not by much. I guess it's all up to how you train. The reason those muay thai guys are so good is because they do a lot of conditioning, plus they are really fit compared to the average karate/whatever guy.. They also do a lot of sparring instead of doing katas and stuff.

And is it true that in wing chun, size doesn't matter that much?

Thats all pretty much the truth. Alot of MA should concentrate more on conditioning, very few MA schools even do physical training.

size does not always matter, but sometimes it does. I think wing chun deals well with larger opponents since there is no force on force. All attacks are redirected. Yip Man took on a much larger Dragon KF player, and well, the Dragon dude got his ass handed to him.

Your talking about Yip Man the same Yip Man that taught Bruce Lee arent you?

I was wondering is he still alive?

Yes that Yip Man. I think he died in December 1972, aged 79 years. Some people say Yip Man and BLee didn't touch hands much. They say one of Yip Man's senior students did most of the teaching.

Some of the Students in Yip Mans class found out that Bruce Lee had some German in him. And refused to train with him. But bruce was taught by one of the more senior students out side of class but Bruce and Yip Man did train together sometimes

I've always wanted touch hands with one if Yip Man's students. Hopefully I will get to meet my sigung who was one of his students for a while. Him and Yip Man were very close.
