  • muay thai sucks???

hey question...sorry if its stupid but after my last post (is muay thai good for self defense?) i have been getting more emails than not saying that muay thai is just a sport and not really well suited for self defense....

so here is my new question...i am fairly new to all this and what it comes down to is that i dont really care about tournament fighting, i will probably try it once but that is not the reason i am wanting to take this up, it is 99% for self defense.

where I live and my time schedule these are the choices that I have and I like them both a lot so if you guys could tell me which would be a better self defense style I would appreciate it.

choices are......muayt thai or shaolin kung fu....

    Shaolin kung fu??

takes years for that.. so many forms..
the teaching will never be the same.. only if you go to china and train.. then maybe..

muay thai is where to go.. trust me..

i've been in over 100 street fighting, gang brawls, rumbles..

most of these fools here never fight or never had a real fight..

i've been into fights where i never knew martial arts

been into fights where i had some training in martial arts

and have had fights with more training...

i am telling you first hand...

that muay thai is good to know...

most of these guys train or learn kung fu but can't say they have fought in the street ..

trust me on this on kid..

Goto both school and make your own decision.

Your fighting ability depends on you, not your dojo, kwoon, fighting hall, teacher, or how many books you have read or how many so-called "street-fights" you have been in.

          kungfu-no watch

ok so update----called the kungfu place and they said that I could NOT come in and watch a class to see if I like it, that I could come in and ask questions before and after the class but was not allowed to be present during any portion of the training....that pissed me off, I understand that its his place and he can run it how he wants but, it just seems like bad business to me (is that normal? I dont think i am overreacting)anyway i dont want to pay the guy 100.00 a month to just watch one class and see if i would be interested....MUAY THAI, all the way now!!!

thanks to everyone for their input and for crazyjoe covering himself

yeah i was kind of surprised when he told me that, it made me wonder, if they were hiding anything or if they just thought that they were an *elite* school and didnt want outsiders looking on...whatever its they're loss

                holte2,

Go with the Muay Thai trust me on that one.If they don't want you to see a class seems like they're trying to hide something.I started in Bak Sil Lum (northern shaolin) kung fu.What helped me decide was viewing a couple of classes.

I love kung fu ,but i think the Muay Thai will help you be able to defend yourself much quicker. It really bothers me when i see kung fu ppl act like some big time above all secret martial arts clan.

                Go with the Muay Thai
That kung fu school is clearly no good.

                  Muy-Thai or Kung-Fu

That Kung-Fu school is a farce!!! It should be shut down. Go with Muy-Thai, It is after all a combat fitghting system. Thai Military & U.S. special forces use their techniques to this day. You'll learn very rapidly to use the tools that Muy-Thai incorporate MT very effective self defense.
                  Best of Luck ---Edge---

P.S. Orale, Joe & anyone else wanna reistitute dojo/kwoon busting???

holte you say you're not interested in competition now but wait till you start training. competition is where you get to really test out what you've learned, and in my opinion the realistic full contact style of muay thai is what makes it great. muay thai stylists whup kung fu fighters butts, and it's not just because they kick thai pads a lot. It's because they practice REAL fighting. Not to say the kung fu guy couldn't get 'em with an eye jab or vital point strike though. Wouldn't be too sporting though. anyway, don't be so sure you won't want to compete once you get up and running. Your confidence and motivation will increase... It's one of the many benefits of training in muay thai.

The SEALs don't use Muay Thai per se. They simply incorporate some techniques and training methods. They do this a lot with many systems.

The SEALs have incorportated methods, principles, and techniques from:

                        Bando

                        Kali

                        Muay Thai

                        Western Boxing

                        Jun Fan Gungfu

That's just the stuff I know of. They probably get some BJJ too, especially since the Army Rangers use it (though not really for combat -- for tatical training).

                          Crazyjoe

True Dat. Navy Seals, Marine corps Recon Rangers, Army Green Berets, Air force Combat control comandos All use Muy-Thai techniques. As do Thai Military. U.S. DEA,CIA Secret Service, U.S Marshalls,You & me & a number of others who know reality from posing. Orale!!!, Muy-Thai no joke , it is an effective fighting system.
Granted Its not the only system U.S. spec war units & the other U.S. agencies use but a good percetage of thier h2h training is. Paul Vunak has taught his Progressive Fighting System(developed from JKD) to some of these agencies also.

it has to say something about the art itself if elite military groups are training in it
                            the weird thing is
is that i was at a army/navy surplus store a couple of years back and they had a really old military tae kwon do traing manual there

they only thing that scares me about MT is
i saw a fight once where a guy kicked another guy and broke his shin
the guy kicking broke his shin
                              freakist thing i ever saw

but how often does that happen
