The Shihan of the Kyokushin Dojo I will join next year is a 5th degree black belt... He's also a 3rd deg BB in Judo and a 2nd in Jiu-Jitsu... He's been doing Martial Arts since he was 5 (began training in Judo). He got his 5th degree in Kyokushin in 1997, even went to Japan to do his examination. And he's been in the MA for 35 years...

By the way, Honda, in what style did u get your black belt? I've seen (and sparred with) 12 year old 1st Dan black belts in Goju-Ryu when I was a kid (I was 14 at the time). When did you go to school, sleep, or went out with your girl?? Shihan Enrique Corredor (my former sensei in Kyokushin) got his 5th degree 5 years ago, after years of training and teaching... To get a 1st deg black belt in Kyokushin you would need at least 7 to 8 (probably more if you have a regular life with work, wife, kids) years of ass busting. I would be 40 in the next 10 years and maybe be a brown belt if I start next year, to be realistic!!

my point is, we all have a different definition of these things, so why make a big deal out of it.
if he worked hard for the belt, then he must be pretty good, who cares what number rank he is.
if he didnt work for it, he will most likely get whooped by someone of a lower rank that did work for it.
and you may say that you know exactly what 3rd degree means, but all you know is what you need to do to get there, and once youre there, all that means is youre better than when you were a 2nd degree, whatever 2nd degree means...

Being a 2nd dan black belt in Shito-Ryu Karate (long, long time ago) myself and after 26 years of martial arts practice, I guess I know what it takes to get a 3rd dan.

Being skilled (even enormously skilled) has nothing to do with being awarded with a 3rd dan black belt. It takes MUCH more than mere motor skills to get a rank so high. Perhaps he deserves a true black belt (which I really doubt), but that's all.

Anyway, I don't but any of this crap: training six hours a day at eight is for pro-athletes only. Most parents wouldn't allow their son to spend all day in the dojo. And, how come someone who is training so hard suddenly becomes a quitter? Man... I can tell a liar when I see one.

The kid and his rank have nothing to do with me, we are not reated in any way, so why do I care about what he brags about? Because I DO love martial arts and because of individuals like this, we don't have much respect nowadays.

Some time ago, a serious practicioner deserved (and got) some respect from most people. Being a blue or brown belt really meant something, and when you finally got awarded with the black belt, that was something to remember.

Today, McDojos are everywhere and most black belts out there coudln't fight their asses out of a paper bag. I don't have problem with Tae Bo or Cardio-Box people, at least they are sincere when they state that they are not martial artists. But I DO have a problem with people who got fake ranks.

And he even has the nerve to trash TKD!!!!! ROTFLMAO!!!

I quit Karate because of its unrealistic training. I never quit martial arts, I just switched to something more real.

Go re-read my post and tell me where I wrote about Karate being a shitty art. I quit Karate because the instructor didn't teach us realistically.

It took him 5 years to get 2nd and 3rd BB, thats pretty standard. 1 year to get 1st .. so what .. its not your style. ITS A RANK NOT STREET FIGHTING ABILITY.
