  • Anyone Know This Style Of Karate

Went to see a Karate class that im considering joining, Ive got mixed feelings about the class so im wondering if anyone can shed some light of wether its any good.
    Shotokan Karate
    Kanazawa Ryu
    International
    Federation
    (S.K.K.I.F)

I want to follow a different path in martial arts than wot ive trained before. I want to empasise on Power Form and technique
So i decided Karate would be a good way to go. The thing is is how much of a karate class is dedicated to Competing and how much is dedicated to Martial Combat which is why it was created in the first place. I wanted to get as close to the roots as karate as i possibly could without training in japan.
I just thought that with Karate being so popular in competitions has it been watered down from the original style. The only point that put me off the class was.
Thier black belts lacked form and full comitment in some of thier techniques. So wot does a black belt mean, Does it mean youve trained like a bitch and And are at your physical peek. Or does it mean your good at KATA
Next when they were warming down they started to free spare. I could see that the way they was fighting looked like point scoring, Rather than out fighting thier oponent they were just trying to get one quick hit in then move out quick.
Near the end of the class i heard the instructer say to a student you must be faster than that as you wont score any points that way.

    Good bits were.
For a change the instructer seemed good lots of form and power Also it was a big class he bragged one of the biggest in the UK
He has about 80 Adults training under him in one class.
    So wot do you recon

Point Scoring Sucks .. I cant stand it. The karate I have done ... when we spar there are three judges .. at the end they hold up a flag of the fighter they think control'd/owned the fight. 95% of the time I agree with the judges discissions, so i think this way is great .. point scoring is lame. I think the only rules are no nuts/eyes/fishhooks and no drawing blood.

I dont agree on the drawing blood one .. as pretty much any time you hit someone in the nose they bleed .. I have seen a fight lost when someone got hit in the nose and he started playing with his nose hard core till it bled. On the upside the person bleeding can chose to continue the fight and not win by default after the blood flow is control'd.

Personally I think anything weaker than the above rules and its not worth doing .... unless thats what you are after??? I dunno give more details heh.

Karate One of the oldest fighting styles which has survived for hundreds of years is a load of shit.
Its that closed mindedness which is gonna prevent you from learning jack shit.

                Karate no that old

Maybe the Okinawan styles are old, the karatejutsu styles, but the japanese karate-do styles are pretty weak except for Kyokushin and its break offs

                  shotokan

I done shotokan karate for a long long time and i think it’s closest to the original karate style. Here is a site that should explain what shotokan karate is.

                    Shotokan

The Japan Karate Association (JKA) and the Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation are your best sources of information on Shotokan.

                      KYOKUSHINKAI

I have to go with ryanhall... what's on your mind Angry?

We're talking about Karate, right? Ok... What about Kyokushinkai? IMHO, Kyokushinkai is the best karate style out there. Full contact fighting, Muay Thai alike kicking with shins, kicking to the legs, knees... It has Katas and also Tameshiwari (breaking). Combat (Kumite) training is important for building quick reflexes. Katas (Kihon) are important because they're the very foundations of Karate. The competition is in full contact, with judges and point scoring. A bout lasts three minutes and one extension of two minutes. A point (Ippon) is scored for a clean knock out. This is where the opponent is unable to stand up within five seconds of being knocked down by any legal technique. Legal techniques include hits to the body (punch, elbow, kick, knee); kick and knee kick to the legs (inside and outside) and to the head; knockdown technique followed by a finishing punch. Half point (Wazari) is scored for a knock down technique listed as legal, where the opponent regains a standing position with three seconds. In contrast to traditional styles, combat is continous, not fight-contact-stop-score. U also fight with bare knuckles (but can't punch to the face). I saw the word "power" somewhere... If this is what u look for, check if there's a Kyokushinkai dojo nearby...

                      My 2 cents...

                        Shotokan-Kanazawa

Heres a place where you can find info on Hirokazu Kanazawa's Shotokan: http://www.fightingmaster.com/legend...zawa/index.htm

but the dojo you described sounds pretty pathetic so maby its not under the same master.

Full contact .. but you cant punch to the face??? that doesnt sound like full contact to me. I do like the point scoring system though.
