  • Favorite Moves?

For those of you that actually are athletes, what are your favorite moves when sparring? Arm bars, chokes, sweeps...etc.

I know there are some non-BJJ dudes here and you can list what moves you are favorites.

    I'm just curious.

The matches that I would win were usually with an armlock rather than a choke.
Well from starting on your knees, I like to set up someone to get them thinking about grabbing onto me up high. Then I can duck underneath them and basically just drop them with a double leg. I pulled it off nearly 90% of the time I sparred, and it puts you directly into a strong hold down, yokoshiho gatame. (or side control )
Um... I enjoyed riding people a lot, and was good at switching from say Yokoshiho to kami shiho, and back to mount, etc. So even when I wasn't submitting, I could usually keep ahead in dominant position, and points I guess. I love heel hooks, but for the most part they're illegal to do in sparring or in a match

    Take care,
    Ryu

        Sweep...

I ain't no athlete, but I am partial to collar chokes on top and armbars from the guard. My triangle is pure dogshit due to numerous ankle injuries.

My stand up grappling is stronger than from the knees. I am a mediocre wrestler, with some judo moves, and fortunately most BJJers I know are shitty wrestlers without any judo moves.

        LET ME ADD........

Most of the dudes I now train with are bigger and stronger than me, and that puts me at a disadvantage in the knee-starting position... I feel that upper body strength is a giant advantage when you start this way... so I end up using my guard and (vainly) trying to sweep these behemoths.

          1) Triangle... (girlfriends are easy targets, lol)

          2) Also, the lapel choke from behind.

            fav submission = heelhook
fav takedown = double leg slam (well no sh*t )
fav strike = knees from the plum clinch
fav grappling position = knee on stomach

My favorite sub is umaplata, but I prefer sweeps and then working subs from above.

Umaplata is a slick move... that's one I'd like to learn/perfect.

When you say favorite, does that mean I have to be able to do the move on anyone?

I dig the guillotine and the rear naked choke with the hooks in. That don't mean I can do it .

I also like key locks (I'm always on the business end of 'em, so I've grown to respect them).

I would really like to learn more leg locks (where are ya, Andreh?). I got a friend of mine with an ankle/achilles lock, but that was blind luck. I knew what I was going for and I saw the opening, but I didn't know exactly how to cinch it in.

As far as striking. I like the lead hand (left) hook, roundhouse kicks to the inner and outer thighs, side kicks to the solar plexus (or the hip to jam 'em) and elbows from inside. I like head kicks too (roundhouse, and spinning hook kicks), but I'm not that much of a gambler, even though I live in Las Vegas.

                    Striking: Knees, definitely.

                    Takedowns: High clinch and trip.

Ground: kimura: either from mount or guard.

High push kicks to the chest and a fast front leg roundhouse. knees with the clinch is cool too, but it takes alot of energy

I like to look for chances to get a kneebar.
I cannot for the life of me comprehend why Brazilians think that lower body locks are cheap! I could say the same for lapel chokes...
I also like to spar avoiding the traditional bjj takedown, pass guard, look for mount and finish scenario. Sprawling, turtling, etc are funner. I can't play this game with guys that are more advanced than me though, they will end up beating me the methodical way.

I like sweeps.I will let myself be put in bad positioons just to get out of them.Any escape that leaves you in the better position.
Turn to the side to get a shoulder lock and then sweep and end up with knee in his belly is one of my all time favs.

I love both grappling and boxing. The funny thing is I got in a couple of fights with two really oustanding wrestlers. They both knew of my boxing back ground and quickly tried for a single leg takedown. I have ended these two fights rather quickly with gullotine chokes right as they shot in. Sort of the same fashion Guy Mezger defeated Tito in their first fight.

I also like to start a fight standing throwing a quick lead left hook with no intention of landing it so my opponent is defending his chin and then imediately shoot for his leg where I quickly mount and usually strike, choke, or armar for the win

If the guy has better hands than me I like to do the head twist takedown, the rear leg takedown, the good old double leg. Once on the ground I normally scoot around to behind their head and slam some knees into the top of their head. Once i've diminished them it makes eye jabbing really easy. For submissions I enjoy heel hooks, finger locks and chokes.

Oh sorry, you said this was for athletes.
