  • Bob Sapp/Minotauro Pride Fight

Did anyone see this fight from back in August? I was thinking about it, and if this were a real street brawl, every time Sapp slammed Nogueira, it would have been on his head/neck instead of flat on his back. I guess the discussion I'm trying to start is:

What is the best way to fight a Bob Sapp (someone who is built like an NFL linebacker - close to 300 lbs, but all muscle and still somewhat mobile)? Assume that this person has limited experience with fighting...the fight from pride showed that grappling with him in a more realistic situation could easily be fatal. You take it to the ground, he can lift you back up and slam you. I also saw him against Ernesto Hoost at a K1 event...Sapp won by cornering and pummeling, but Hoost was starting to get at his leg with thai kicks, and when he was pummelling Hoost, it did look like there was some room to counter or use some quick sidesteps when not cornered. So I'm under the impression that you should try to strike it out with a bigger guy and hope that you're a touch quicker.

Agree? Disagree? Of course, always try to avoid the fight or run, but let's assume this is unavoidable...

    Happy New Year.

300 lbs? He's pissed enough to want to do some serious damage to you? Sucker punch in a vital throat/eyes if you can reach and try to finish things or run. Better yet, use a weapon. There are just some people that you can not beat with your bare hands. Weapons were invented for a reason.

I thought Bob Sapp was more like 350 pounds? And he's had some training from Maurice Smith and Josh Barnett. Hopefully you're 350 pounder on the street hasn't had any training. I would just avoid the dude all together. I already know I don't grapple well with really strong guys.

I'm not personally faced with a situation like this. I just saw that pride fight that he lost and the K1 match he won, and wondered how to handle a guy like that in the ring. I came away with the impression that you have a better chance slugging with him than grappling. I guess I'm looking for feedback from a competitional standpoint - let's assume the obvious run/pick up a weapon/shatter a kneecap. What is the best stratgy against a guy like that in MMA competition? Has anyone on the boards faced a guy like that? My vote is for striking, but I haven't been/seen any other weight mismatches like that where the guy is pure muscle...
