  • BJJ or Judo?

ive read many threads on both
but overall whats better for self defense purposes?

    Neither.

I just got done downloading a clip of a fight that took place on a school yard. It was awfully pathetic looking but there was quite a bit of grappling during the fight and they did end up going to the ground. The smaller kid that was getting beat up ended up in a mount and didn't have the good sense to keep it. Had he kept the mount and knew a few good joint locks and ways to stabalize his base he would have won the fight.

So obviously grappling, throws and takedowns have their place. But everyone will argue that Judo and BJJ won't work in a street fight because you'll be rolling around on broken glass and the guy you're fighting will have 20 friends that will beat you up and he'll have a knife or a gun or a missile launcher or grenades and what if what if.

If I had to pick one, I'd pick Judo. Ground work isn't going to work if you can't get the guy on the ground. Knowing how to do a single leg and a double leg takedown and never practicing it (BJJ) isn't enough when it comes time for action.

If you guys haven't seen this video, the filename is schoolground fight.mpg and I dl it on Kazaa. If you have any grappling skill it all, this fight is hard to watch. You just want to reach and slap the hell out of the smaller guy in this fight.

Both Judo and BJJ can teach you good skills to add to your self defense arsenal.

However, the primary focus of each is sport and 1 on 1 confrontation.

If you are looking for good self defense, searh the other threads, we've kicked this dead horse to dust....

Kazaa is a peer to peer file sharing client. Kazaa lite is much better and is a small download. www.kazaalite.com if you want it.

The school yard fight video is a real good example of why Judo is very good for one on one confrontations. If either kid knew what they were doing, one throw on the head would have ended that fight very quick.

Spanky, you mean something to compress video with? Try Virtual Dub. It's probly the best free video editing and compressing software out there. It's also very good for capturing video. You can capture and compress on the fly with a half way decent system, even with most webcams. www.virtualdub.org. You might also want to donwload TMPGenc. It's really good for converting video files for video CD's or just converting to a format that Virtual Dub can work with. http://www.tmpgenc.net/

Just make sure you've got the codecs installed that you plan to compress with.

Brad2, I agree with you. The bigger kid in the video looked like he had some concept of grappling and throwing until he ended up on the bottom. Then the smaller kid just let him get up.

                    Cool. Thanks.

Now where can I get the CODECS to decompress the video you have?

I think you can download divx from www.divx.com. I figured if you opened the schoolfight.mpg with Windows Media Player it would probly download the ms mpeg4 codec automatically.

I believe I will post divx on my new site. I think I'll do that right now.

I'll add more stuff to the site and change the layout in time. The school fight video is different now. It doesnt need the ms mpeg4 codec. It just needs divx like the other video. You can also download divx from my site.

I've got to have a website to work on since I won't be working on my old instructor's site anymore.

To think that Jiu-Jitsu doesn't include strikes & some stand up (Yes including punches, Kicks & knees) is silly. It is also silly to think that some play ground grab ass between two kids has anything to do with the ability of Judo or Jiu-Jitsu. I bet you can't find a Judo "fighter" my weight that can beat me up. I could probably take the kid that won that play ground situation too.

GRACIEAUSTIN, I'm assuming that you have some decent takedown skills. At my old school only the wrestlers had good takedowns. The rest of us were instructed once or twice on how to do a single leg and we did some double leg drills, but then everytime we went to grapple we'd start on our knees. That's BS.
And whatever that takedown is called where you get behind the guy and stick a leg out and go back for the takedown, well, that doesn't even work against judo guys.
