  • Selfdefence martial arts

I am talking about arts like hapkido, kravmaga and so on. I know they teach techniqes of waiting someone to punch first then takes their energy and use it against them. But I was just wondering do this pure self defence martial arts work against actual martial artist or do they just work on street thungs and those that dotn know what they are doing. I mean there is only so mant diff moves they can teach you and can they teach you a technique for EVERY martial arts move? I am just interested if someone knows form first hand experience if a martial art liek that would be abel to succesfully end a fight with someone like a muy thai practicioner or boxing or JKD....?

I wouldn't put too much faith in Krav, and I don't care for Hapkido (I know others do so I wouldn't discount it). However, the best "reality-based" self defense teachers put out people who can definitely handle themselves. Sparring and fighting in the classical sense can be a big part of self defense training. On the other hand, you have systems that focus so solely on the "foul" tactics that there is almost no sparring.

Don't fall into the trap of believing that a street punk who isn't trained is any less dangerous than a martial artist. It comes down person to person. Some people are just dangerous period. More cruel, tough, evil, and dangerous than you would believe.

Overall, I would say that "yes," some self defense systems definitely can hold their own against good "trained" fighters. You don't spar in real life, so who can beat who in a straight out match is really irrelevant.

Best reality systems in my book:
    Sammy Franco's Contemporary Fighting Arts
    Richard Dimitri's Senshido
    WWII combatives- Carl Cestari/Jim Grover/others

There are more than just these guys (i.e. Vunak, Thompson), but they are at the top of my list

I am with ryan on this...

absolutely look at Richard Dimitri's and Sammy Franco's site.

Senshido is, at its heart, a Reality-Based Self-Defense system. What this means is that it teaches survival skills for real-world violent situations.

Contemporary Fighting Arts is a cutting-edge reality based martial arts system specifically designed for real world self-defense situations.

      also Geoff Thompsons site...www.geoffthompson.com

I WOULDN'T suggest Paul Vunak at all.....especially for self-defense...same goes for hapkido.

            Hi salamat po...

This is based on my personal experiences with Paul, I have trained with him on different occasions. If you ever get a chance to look at any of his tapes..you'll see what I mean....no clue about realistic self defense.

Probably the worst tapes of all are the R.A.T tapes...horrible. Especially in comparison to the other guys I mentioned.

Hey James, thanks for the info but I still am deciding which tapes to get. Should i go with sammy franco or senshido. They seem very similar in regards to getting right to the point

Doesn't matter which ones you get...they are both top of the line.

They both focus on the real deal...and they compliment each other in everyway. You won't be dissapointed regardless of which one's you buy.

But me personally...if I were you...I would get them both..even if you can't get them all at once. Get them both eventually.

                Regards,

I'm with James on this one. Both systems' tapes are first rate. You can't go wrong with either.

BTW, James. Checked out your site. Good stuff.
