A documentary on British TV was made about
me on Ultimate Fighting showing my British title fights and some questions were put to Sir Henry Cooper about our sport.
Henry Cooper, if you don't know, is a British boxer who had the memorable fight with Mohammad Ali.
He is a big influence in British sport and this is what he had to say about NHB fighting.
REPORTER: Sir Henry Cooper has just watched two of Ian Freemans fights, the man known to be the best Ulitmate Fighter in Britain.
He wants to speak out because he says Ultimate Fighting will get confused with the sport he represents.
SIR HC : I've seen two fights where there are is a lot of grappling on the ground where I don't think this will be a great spectator sport, but you will still have those sadistic people who want to go and see two big guy's in there. It's not boxing, it's fighting, there are no rules to it.
You see him getting his arm around his head and under his neck (quioltine). Now look at that, he's pulling there, he could snap his ruddy neck.
If it slightly got out of hand, looking at those two, it looks as though them two could lose their rag at any time, just imagine if someone goes bizerk, which can happen, there could be serious injury or fatality.
I just can't go along with that. People see two guy's in a ring, they think it's boxing and it would reflect on proper boxing.
REPORTER : If you were 20 year old now, would you do that?
SIR HC : Definetly not, I'd stay well clear of it. I would not advice my son or anyone I know to do that.
REPORTER : Would you ban that?
SIR HC : Yes, I would ban that. They just go in there and smash them and do what they want to do............
There you have it guy's, a leading figure in British sport speaking out about Ultimate Fighting. No the wonder the UK is so far behind in NHB when you have sportsmen like Sir Henry Cooper bringing it down.
I've been trying to promote the sport for years now, but as soon as I get one step forward, I get knocked two steps back.
