Maybe because water, while formless, can eventually wear rock, which has form, down to nothing over time.

Or maybe because it just sounds real cool.

I was out walking with my two sons a few days ago. And they got "caught short" and needed a pee.

Their water then clashed on rocks. Did they perfrom your Kata?

Hope there wasn't too much splashback from the rocks!

the kata is called that because its has fluctuating levels of power. It incorproates all my favourite techniques and it works 4 ME. Why dont u try creating kata instead of blindly following your instructors. Your skills will increase.

we follow instructors because they know more than we do. kata is not a very good way of developing ma skills (in my opinion)

people only do kata because they are seen as old and mystical. not many people will want to do your kata because it has no mystical history to it

                      you really annoy me

things you see in karate kid and kung-fu movies are not the things that happen in real life

                        MMMmmmmmmwwwwwwwwwwwahahahahahahah!!!!!

This sort of thing really really really makes me laugh!!!

The fact is that Kata are generally created by men who have spent their entire life practicing martial arts and are masters in the true sense of the word (skilled and intelligent fighters). Kata are used as forms of training. They are developed by people with an inate knowledge of instruction and learning, and how to create an efficient fighter. This is why real martial artists dont just make up there own when they feel like it. Why fix something that aint broken.

I dont think anyone here beleives that kata alone create good fighters, but they do help people in becoming fighters. (balance, posture etc)

There is a group around my area tht make up their own Iaido kata (as well as Karate, Aikido etc). A few of them attended a seminar with a Japanese sensei and were told that they knew absolutly nothing and were just playing around. When they tried test cutting it was a joke!!

People that assume too much, understand very little!

You are not part of the Bushido group are you??

                        Oh dear!!!

Errr...no thanks. I'm not really a kata/forms man anymore, even though I did do them in the past. I never created my own forms though! I agree with the other posters that forms should not not created only after a few years training.

What happens when you find out those moves don't work anymore? Have they been battle tested against people from different disciplines? What do you mean by fluctuating power?

I still think my kids created a better Kata. It is easy to do, useful and very satisfying.........
