    Ring sports do not equate to street self defense. They are simply too restrictive and limiting to the practitioner. One's time would be much better spent learning defenses to typical street attacks.
    Boxing starts out with your opponent standing 25 feet away from you with a bell and a referee signaling the commencement. A street attaqck starts out with a bottle smashing you in the head from behind.

      I agree with you. If all you care about is defending yourself then sport MA isn't the way to go about it. I do think that karate, MT, Boxing, and other sport oriented arts is better than nothing at all. But it's not as good as pure defense oriented systems.

        okay, i gotta jump in here. on the punching thing.

        The faster something moves as long as it has mass the more power it will have. that's physics.


        So if You throw your jab with "your weight" behind it. And I throw my jab with my "weight" behind it. And those weights are equal. and you punch comes at 50 mph and mine is moving at 100mph your screwed.

        So if you get enough speed on your punches you will have power assuming you can get some mass behind it. The more mass the more power.


        Now mass is a secondary factor because you cannot change your mass during an encounter. You can change your speed.

        That is why you toss a brick at someone and it hurts them. You shoot them and it puts a whole in them. It ain't the mass that is the problem it's the speed.

          You can't change your mass, but you can change the percentage of your mass that goes into the target. Proper technique = more usable mass.

            If, at the onset of an altercation, I were to lose control of my bodily functions, then I have effectively reduced my mass.

            Force=(Mass - Urine) * Acceleration
