I'd like to see a competition where the competitors don't actually fight each other. Instead there are a couple of steroid heads. One with a snooker cue and the other with a screwdriver. The winner is the competitor who most consistently survives. This would be far better than the sport we see call MMA.

I'm not sure which style would win. But I am sure that BJJ would be one of the first to lose.

BJJ and muay thai have been beaten; I was comparing how at one time, these styles were fierce (and still are today) because of the training methods and fight prep.
Gotcha. More arts are adopting better training methods, but many still aren't. I've seen a dumbing down of Muay Thai in some schools over the last couple of years as more people take an interest in it, but as long as the pros still train hard it'll keep it's rep.

An aquaintence of mine who's a pretty good amautur Muay Thai fighter was telling me about the dangers of thinking his art is street ready. His fears are the bum rush, if someone grabs his legs or grapples him. He does a little cross training but he's a kickboxer and that takes up most of his training time.

True. After studying many MA, you tend to focus on one. Muay Thai is pretty effective for self-defense but if someone tackled you or swung a chair at you then what??

Its good to know the basics of another art and work on them from time to time, like sprawling, bridging the mount, passing from the guard to the cross body and executing submissions against a resisting opponent. Sometimes other styles of grapplers are not familiar with your style of submissions. For example Judo guys don't use variations of the ankle lock very often; wrestlers are not familiar with the guillotine - unless they cross-train.

Need BJJ as your base or you wont make it???

No dis to BJJ - In competition/sport NHBish type of thing ... yes VERY effective.. been proven many times ...well not too much recently

This whole style V.s Style thing... lame as it is to talk about... it can only really be argued about IN sport/competition situations

I think most of us agree that its all about the individual and the training... NOT the art...

And for REAL fights???... dont know where to start about BJJ!!....although not completely useless ( could go into more detail but I wont!...) but definately not a great idea ...

Try and arm bar me while i bite a chunk out of your leg...

Like I would really want to grapple a guy with a knife....

What the hell does style even matter in a REAL NO RULES fight???...When things like weapons and multiple opponents can be involved...

I agree Tom, but there are only so many hours in a day. I have a job, kids, wife and all the things that they bring with them. Somewhere in that mix I have to fit in time to hit the gym to stay in shape and then find the time to train in a marital art. Several years back I was able to juggle job, wife, 1 infant son, gym and train in BJJ, Muay Thai and Kali, but those days are now gone. What I do now is to try to get the most out of what I take now, stay in shape and hope for the best.

glock fu - fill clip, get it ready for action , then pull trigger.. nothing gets more simple than that

Glock-fu Ryu? After spending all that money on the instructorship you pick shooting someone over biting and pinching them into a bloody puddle?

funny you should say that... the old college thing were you're all messing around and it gets out of hand?

I tackled some boy and he got up, and threw a chair at me. I was pleased cos instantly my guard went up and I blocked it. it ****ing hurt and I had a bruise for a good while tho. Still happy tho, i mean it coulda hit me in the face lol.

Sorry I can't remmber who said they're thaiboxing friend fears the shoot? obviously there is no simple "end all" but he just needs some practice. sprawl as wide as possible and knee away or elbow away. Knees are dangerous as if the guys good hell grab the leg, which could make life difficult. but still, explain it to him i'm sure he'll like it lol there are worse places to be
