June 4, 2003 -- A feisty Manhattan woman fought off a registered sex offender who forced her into an office-building basement, where he tried to overpower her with his fists, a letter opener and a club before she escaped, policesaid.
During the pitched fight, the 42-year-old woman managed to kick a realistic-looking toy gun from her attacker's hand and grabbed the blade of the letter opener he was pressing close to her stomach - and bend it in half.
"The victim is an extremely courageous lady," said Deputy Inspector Susan Morely.
The violence occurred Monday in a Canal Street building where George Augustine had been working as an elevator operator and living in the basement for three months, cops said.
He was freed from prison in 2000 after serving 17 years behind bars for several attacks on women.
Cops said that about 4 p.m. the victim, who works in the building, got into Augustine's elevator and agreed to go with him to the basement, where he said he had shoes for her to look at.
As the elevator descended, the bespectacled Augustine pulled out the "gun," which looked like the real thing.
In the basement, he allegedly punched her face and tried to force her into a chair, where he had stashed a spool of duct tape.
Realizing Augustine was deadly serious, she began to fight for her life, kicking the "gun" from his hands.
The ex-con then pulled out a letter opener. But she bent the blade before kicking it from his hands.
Finally, Augustine slammed her head with a club, but she fought him off and ran behind a metal gate, which she locked behind her, cops said.
She pulled out her cell phone and dialed 911.
A parole spokesman said the 5-foot-9, 160 pound Augustine was conditionally released in October 2000.
