  • United Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Riverside, CA

    Hello,

Does anyone train at this school? I believe the instructor is Rommel Dunbar whom is an affiliate of Pedro Carvalho. How is the classes there? Does the instructor have any bjj tournament wins or nhb wins under his belt? Hows his game? slow and tight or fast and loose? Any other info is appreciated. Thanks

    Hi,

I just saw your post and I hope I can be of some help.
I have been training at United Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Riverside for almost 5 years now and I have had my son training here for just under 2 years. Rommel's classes are awsome! The conditioning is the hardest workout of my life. We spend at least 1 1/2 straight on the mat every class and we can come in 7 days a week. Also he has one of the best kids programs in the states. As for Rommel's game...he is very technical! As far as tournaments, he recently won 1st in the nationals and 3rd in the Pan Am's.
I hope this was helpful to you and I hope to see you on the mat.

I am planning to go to an introductory class tonight to see what I think of the whole thing. My schedule would be, should I choose to sign up, Tues. and Thurs. nights and Sat. morning. All this for about $130/month.

I've been by the school. Seems very professionally run. In just listening to talk in the training room, they compete, and their kids involved are placing high in tournaments.

The instructor works them hard on the nights mentioned for an hour and a half, part of which is conditioning and the other part is learning skills. After classes there is Open time for members to come in and spar.

      UPDATE 9-15-2006

      I am writing a month and three years later . . .

I went in for my visit, and was way to out of shape to finish the workout. No shame, just had to admit that an old injury and a lack of conditioning proved that ONE NEEDS TO MAKE A SERIOUS COMMITMENT ABOUT ENTERING THIS PROGRAM. I am now teaching school back in Texas, but were I to return to Riverside, I would tackle the program again because I think the rigor of the program is the greatest I have ever seen in ANY sport I have been a part of. I was a 5-Time All-American in NAIA Track and field, and even qualified for the Olympic Trials. But I never had to work as hard as I did in that one introductory lesson. I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to develop not only skills but character as well! ! !

Thanks BJJ_fighter and BereanDAd for replying. Two weeks after posting this message, I decided to go back to my old school (Ralph Gracie OC) even though Unitedbjj is a lot closer to my home. The reason was the price difference. I can only train once a week and at united, Rommel wants I believe $100 or so. Anyways, I am from corona. If you guys want to roll sometime, just let me know. I am still a beginner though, only 4 months under my belt. Thanks again guys and good luck on your training.

I have been training with Mr. Dunbar for slightly over 1 year and I really like the school. It is very tough but we all stick together. You get to roll with brown belts , several purple belts and at times Pedro Carvalho. Mr Dunbar lives for what he teaches. If want to cage fight he will get you ready for that also.

Rommel Dunbar Is very knowledgable in Muay Thai. He was a world class competitor in Tae Kwon Do and leads his older students that would like to compete in MMA towards Muai Thai as well as Jiu Jitsu. I have been to the Monday night class and the contact is solid. I know its free to try out a class.

I checked out the schedule on their website, but could not find MT listed. Anyone know what days/nights it is offered?

They are at the school right now. Rommel practically lives there. (909)-687-9000. Just call and ask. Good Luck.
