  • Was Don Frye- one of the best the UFC has ever seen?

    Don Frye,

There's a name that hasn't been mentioned in a while.
I was watching some old UFC tapes the other day and managed to reaquaint myself with the fact that Frye can really mix it up! Pound for pound he is one of the best all-round fighters I have seen in a MMA ring. Ahh, the golden years.

Granted that he was spanked by Coleman in UFC 10, he still has one of the best records in the UFC.

I would like to see him back. Anyone else?

    definitely

one of the first cross-trained fighters.

But I wouldn't say coleman spanked him.

I still think frye would have beaten coleman if he hadn't had the tougher fights before the finals.

Frye vs. Coleman - first one could've gone either way. I NEED to see a rematch though, would be great. Frye would lose unless he started training for this fight at least 6 months in advance. Frye vs. Coleman, a superfight at the Pride GP Finals????

            Gone either way?

Um, Coleman crushed him, start to finish. Coleman was tired too, being Coleman. He was just too big and strong for Frye to dominate, and he (Frye) couldn't fight well from his back or stop the takedown.

Frye would only have a shot if he could stay up and punch Mark. Sooner or later G&P would take over though.

BTW, Frye was a helluva fighter, but he was just too small for Mark.

He might have made a better Middleweight. Tito Ortiz reminds me of Don a bit. Nice combination of punching and grappling skills...

You don't think Frye had an MUCH harder tourney then Coleman? Plus, the beggining of the fight I thought to be pretty even until the end when Coleman started picking him up and punching dead in the face. You think that if they fought without the tourney Coleman would've beat him that badly? Thats what I meant by going either way.

I always loved Frye. His UFC record was what, 9-1 or 10-1? Not bad. He was exciting to watch too. As for the Coleman fight I think Frye did fight the tougher fights in the tournament but there was also the factor that Coleman and Frye has very similar skill and style, but Coleman was bigger and stronger. Has Frye ever fought outside his UFC fights?

The Frye /Coleman fight looked like a payback of what Frye did to Bittetti ...

Got thrown around by a bigger stronger guy..

Good point Bau13. (Hows your new place doing?)

Anyway, I haven't seen anything of Frye outside of the UFC other than the humorous exchanges between him and Shamrock.
I am not entirely sure why he didn't return to the UFC. Maybe it was because of the controversy surrounding his "quick" work of Mark Hall in the Ultimate Ultimate.

Personally, I think that if Hall really did want to throw the fight, and given his and Frye's experience in the UFC, they would at least have put on a better show for the audience. Basically I think it happened 'too quickly' for it to have been a work. That, or they were really bad actors....hmmm.

I will never forget that Bittetti massacre.

At some points you just wanted to turn away it was that nasty.

Although Bittetti sure as hell could take a blow...

                          Frye's a stud!!!

I always felt that he was definitely one of the best 200 lb fighters on the planet. We'll never know cause he's roided out at 235 lbs now, but I think he could probably take anyone under or around that weight.

                          later dudes.....

UFC Superfight Ken Shamrock Vs Don Frye..
