    wow 5 years?? you are a newbie SZ. Good post though. You know a lot for only 5 years. A lotta people miss the whole mind-set avoidance aspect of self-defense - and it's the most important part...

      lol if you havn't learned that after 1 year i would be worried about you. lol.

      Im not sure if SZ was the ex body builder though....i thought he was talking hypotheticaly.

        Of course, in a street fight you can bite, stick fingers into eyes, throw rocks...still, personally I believe in MT, Kickboxing, boxing for stand up fighting. Add some grappling skills and you are complete package.

        For Tai chi dudes...
        Why don't you go to MT, boxing or Kickboxing gym to the ring and test your Tai chi skills for real. Just go and fight.

        You can also test how real your energy flow with grapplers too

          Tai Chi will probably lose in a street fight or a sporting fight, however, tai chi will provide you with some excellent tools in self defense that the more physical 'I'm gonna kick you in the head' arts do.

            He said that tai chi is good because it helps you to remain calm and AVOID FIGHTS! Idiot. The real test would be if he went to a boxing/MT gym and DIDN'T have a fight.

                    You can take something from any martial art and make it useful. Relaxing in a fight is important, Tai Chi could be good for that, (I'm assuming, I've never studied Tai Chi) Grappling, kicking and whatever else. The key is knowing when to use a certain technique. I can kick someone in the head without a doubt, does that mean I'm going to come jumping, spinning and kicking as high as I can when we get into a brawl? Hell no, but that doesn't mean a situation won't arise that a high kick may be useful. If I see the opening, I'm going to tear your head off. The same goes with any other technique. I can give you every tool in the world, you still may not be able to build an engine!!

                      sorry for shouting but it seems some of you are a bit too eager to make every thread a selfdefence thread

                      Sage:

                      the sloppy kicks are a result of the larger distance to the opponent, which is because both fighter are causious of being hit (when they are grablers) or being taken down ( when they are strike artist)
                      same holds true for strikes and punches

                              Okay, okay… Kicks can be very effective. The low kick is very effective. The reason that it is not as prevalent in the UFC or other MMA events is that grapplers are training in MT and have better leg conditioning and most MT guys know the grapplers are waiting for a kick so they can shoot in for a take down.

                              In street fights leg kicks are great. I stopped one guy with one technique. It was a shin bone on the guy’s thigh he grabbed his thigh and went to the ground. Fight over! I’ve seen another guy I knew do the same thing. People who haven’t conditioned they’re legs to take kicks go down easily to them.

                              Kicks are not a large part of my street fighting (self-defense) strategy, but they are still effective. You just have to know when to throw them.
