I've been thinking recently about how different styles have different attitudes to stepping while striking. For example in boxing the idea is that you keep one leg forward and keep it there, you can throw lead hand punches with one arm or rear hand punches with the other. In many traditional martial arts you have one leg forward but you can step so that the other leg is forward. Boxing uses a lead hand punch and a rear hand punch, karate uses a stepping lead hand punch and stepping combos (like a stepping lead hand block followed by a rear hand punch). I have been thinking about how different combinations of these could be used like: If a style used only static lead hand punches and stepping lead hand punches or if a style only used rear hand punches and stepping block/rear hand combos. What about back steps?
The same can be said for leg moves, do you put your foot back where it started, step forward to advance on an opponent or step to the side in preparation for another kick? Do you switch stance to hit with the other leg? Do you use lead leg kicks?
