  • Any Advice?

Hi all I sort of posted this b4 but didn't get a response.

For those of you that compete or have competed.

In the next 6-12months I want to compete in MMA.
Now from what I understand in the UK the sport tends to be split into 3 groups (don't know if there's a governing body yet).

    Amateur - grappling only

Semi Pro - grappling & strikes (no head strikes)

    Pro - the whole thing.

Now I'm thinking of starting in the amateur to build on my grappling (v.basic wrestling).
My striking game is ok (kickboxing/boxing).Some guys I know have done a couple of amateur & don't see the point of doing anymore they want to jump in the Cage. Now I know I'll be at a big disadvantage with amateur 'cos of no strikes, but I think if I want to progress then that's what I should do?Or should I just jump in the 'Cage' & get 'GP'd & choked?

    Anyone got any advice/experience?

    Cheers Jez

I live in Louisiana and we have alot of "fight clubs" here where they hold NHB and FFC fights. Some of them are different from others but we have grappling, boxing, kickboxing, pankration, or NHB. I would say go in an try each one and see which one you like the most. As long as you are doing at as an amateur it really doesn't matter if you loose of not. I have jumped in the ring with one of my buddies that boxes and it was pretty fun. I grapple with alot of the guys that fight in the NHB around here and it's pretty fun. If you want to be a crowd pleaser though there is only one way to go.....NHB.
