  • ? on bjj moves

i know bjj is still evolving slightly, but do any of you guys have an idea on roughly how many moves there are, is there a specific number of moves to learn before moving on to the next belt etc?
im sure there are counter moves to get out of locks and chokes the bjj masters keep secret and arn't in any text books, but there must be a certain number of moves to be learn't before moving on to blue belt or purple etc.
all help will be greatly appriciated, cheers

I cant tell you numbers but I'll say moving to blue belt will take 2-3 years for the average joe. There are lots of techniques, and the big part is VARIATIONS. The other part is just using them frequently enough to remember them. But they build on each other.

It's never a matter of how many moves that will get you a blue belt or any kind of belt ranking.

        Ryron put it best:

"What makes the difference between you guys and me? We know many many of the same moves...so what is it?

        --------SiLeNce--------

"Experience. It takes sparring to get better. Technique and how it is supposed to be used is born from sparring. You could learn all the moves you want. But if you don't spar, don't learn how the body works and what body language is it will all be useless."

Basically, you have to have the ability to use what you know. Shave down the things you are doing wrong till you have an almost purified technique. It takes time and lots of sparring. You cannot have submission without proper position and know how.

          its weird isn't it?
almost all other styles have a set number
eg. 25 katas,15 punching techniques,7 different kicks, throws, etc.
but i have found it impossible to get an answer to this question, even if it is a rough idea.
what i have heard though, that a good indicator of when you are ready to move up is when you can more times than not, submit class mates that have more experience than you.
like mr heel hook said, you have to constantly improve the technique by sparring, but i cant believe i am the only one that is curious of actual numbers.
if a move is created, accepted, then constantly used to teach new generations, then that technique or move would be logged and named, as i suspect has been done with all the other moves.
so if a move has been named, im sure it has been numbered.
          thanks anyway mr heel hook

To get a blue belt in most schools you need to be able to compete effectively with other blue belts at your weight. That's it. There is no better measure.
