i.m.o i think all ma should be done in shoes of some sort and no gloves when hitting the bag, pads, etc.
if u were to fight someone in the street you wouldn,t ask them to take their shoes off and put gloves on.
the shoes, boots or joggers give you a more realistic feel of the fight with balance and grip.
the no gloves theory is the same, a more realistic feel and to toughen the hands
a friend of mine once said he considered grappling of the gi or using your own gi to perform chokes to be a form of cheating against no gi opponents in u.f.c etc.
i just told him that gi fighting is as realistic as it gets considering that people walk around clothed, u wouldn't ask someone to strips down to their fighting shorts on the street

I started wearing grappling shoes on the mat after I broke my toe on the mat barefooted.
I haven't hurt my toes since.

In my opinion when I see someone that is wearing wrestling shoes/boots onto the mat I feel they want to be caught in an ankle lock or toe hold. Problem with wrestling shoes is it makes it very hard to escape these moves and very easy to apply them to the person that's wearing them. When I see someone wearing them I always go for a toe hold.

But classtime isn't a competition, so its a fair tradeoff.

The only situation I could think of that would be adventageous for wearing wrestling boots is if you were going to push your opponent around. I do not do this so it is not a factor for me. If someone comes in and tries to push me around they better be ready to face the infamous Tomoe Nage (circle throw).

my instructor teaches security guards and swat teams so he gets them to wear the full gear while training
jackets, safety boots, batons, gun belts, the lot.
that way they can train to do submission etc on the opposite side of their holster or baton
