  • What is the best martial art style to learn?

    I know you guys are going to say there isn't any, that it depends on different things and blah blah blah. Okay, how about the best combat system for my situation then. I want to learn the combat system that is the most practical. By practical, I mean it has all the moves you can use in a real fight, not in some fancy tournaments. I'm looking for a combat system that is deadly and can quickly neutralize anyone. I'm dedicated to learning as I have tons of time on my hand this summer. Many thanks to you in advance.

    Well to be honest i have been doing martial arts since i was kid. I know that I a going to get a lot of disagreements in what I say. But heres what I have learned.
    The best punchers are boxers.
    The best stand up seems to be Muay Thai
    The best ground art is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
    The best takedowns are wrestlers
    the best Self defense system is Jeet Kune Do.
    Of course its impossible to do all this. So decide what u want. If you like grappling or u want an art that sjust strictly fighting then u have ur boxing and thai boxing. If u want self defense against street attacks, theres Jeet Kune do. I have done Krav maga and i liked it a lot of people dont. Its the israeli army fighting. SO man decide what u want and what u like and then pick whats best from that category!

          What I'm looking for is a real life combat system, the ones that are used by law enforcement and the military. There is a difference between them and traditonal martial arts such as Karate and sporting martial arts such as MT. I'm looking for the most effective real life combat systerm there is to train under.

                Actually Tukong Musool is the military martial art of Korea.

                Tukong = Special Forces
                Musool = Martial Art

                Its a little different than Traditional Hapkido in that its not organized by technique - i.e. wrist techniques, shoulder techniques, hip techniques, doh bok techniques.

                Its more of an aggressive fighting style with emphasis on putting together strike/kick combinations to overcome your opponent and stun them so that you can apply a finishing move. Lots of good dirty fighting moves too.

                  then i suggest you just get a gun permit and pack heat.

                    Tukong Musool, is that even any more info you can provide? I tried looking but found none.

                    HKD--a branch of Hapkido right?

                        I'm new to martial arts, and when i started i was interested in exactly the same thing.

                        The basic punches, kicks etc from JKD are very practicle...

                        In real life situations what are you after? Causing enough injury to an attacker to enable escape. JKD will do it, the other thing is kali/eskrima, give you some weapons training.

                        Cheers and goodluck

                          i.m.o
                          once you mix your bjj with head butts, elbows,knees etc on the take downs, it is unbeatable.
                          there is a time and place for ground fighting, as there is for standup, what i am getting to is, you would obviously throw punches, kicks and the rest first, then clinch, then take down once on the ground in the mount obviously you would punch and elbow before going into any holds in a street fight

                            Enter you opponents friends for some, stabbing, kicking and bottleing action!

                            Nice!

                            In my experience if you get taken to the ground the emphasis needs to be - releasing the opponents grip on you (if he has one) and getting back onto your feet as fast as possible. No mounts, no locks, just release and stand. But this is just my experience.

                            Actually Tukong Musool is the military martial art of Korea.
                            I have seen some of the korean special forces in action and boy do they go at it! impressive to say the very least. a lot more direct and practical than HKD IMO.

                            Find a good teacher in the arts mentioned and you will get what you want.

                            Cheers

                              Tukong Musool is something I want to see in action too. Does anyone know if they teach that in or around San Francisco?
