I am going to be a sophomore in high school next year, and my new school offers wrestling as a sport. I am interested in doing it. I have a little background in wrestling from 5th and 6th grade, but have not done it since then. I have done some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu this summer.

What are your thoughts about wrestling? I only have 3 years of high school left, and playing high school sports would be cool (I played football at my old school, but don't want to play again this year). I think it would be fun and challenging. I am interested in thoughts on the whole subject not just self-defense and fighting.

    Any wrestlers/ex-wrestlers on here?

Never done wrestling (apart from when me and my friends used to play WWF!) or sparred with a wrestler. But I suppose it will give you some simple effective takedowns, some ability to move around on the ground and some knowledge of how to counter takedowns. All of which are useful.

As a sport it probably is fun and exciting (at least if your good enough to win ever so often). Plus it should be good excersise (also good for self defense actualy).

My God, I wish I was young again just so I could join the wrestling team. It gives a great foundation in many things. It's take downs are great and you will always have a chance to practice (spar) with other people letting you develope your ground balance. Do it, it will reward you big time in the future.

        Do it!
If you like it try Greco/Roman style. Okay, old school, but if you are a master in it the other things come easy.

          By all means, do it.

The experience in ground fighting and position as well as having good base, and control on the ground will be priceless to your jiu-jitsu in the future.

What is the worst that could happen, You could be killed in a tragic hamster fire in the science lab next door.

          damn flammable hamsters!

          Good luck!

Thanks for your input. Basically, all I have left to do is talk to the coach. As long as he doesn't make me go bolemic/anorexic or resort to using the F'word every other word, it's somewhat a done deal.

I am going to miss BJJ but it will make me only want to do it more when given the chance.

And the workouts are going to turn me into a conditioning beast.

I just hope I don't end up like Dan Severn. That guy couldn't end a fight to save his life.

Hey now, you live the beast alone. He tries at least.

In wrestling, you won't just learn simple takedowns. You will develope shooting, and a lot of other stuff you won't learn in most of the popular grappling martial arts.

If I were you, I'd do it.

That is because Mr. Poopy loves to roll around with sweaty people.

                            Nah.

I prefer old style Olympic training.

                            Just like the Greeks.

and they say grapplers are susceptible to groin attacks. Heh, the Greeks had their wankers hanging out. Think of all the new submissions that could be developed.
