  • bad stand up skills in mma

if all these mmarts guys all learn muay thai and boxin how come alot of the fights end up looking like bar room brawls with very little technical skill being shown. folk seem to forget to keep their hands up to protect their chins, their punches seem sloppy with wild drunken hooks usually the favourite type of punch. im not saying all mma fights look like this but ALOT do!

alot of them have good MT skills. As for puncking... they want to knock each other TFO. thats why you see alot of wide hooks.

First of all, MMA is a lot better then gaykwondo because you have a wider array of weopons to use against the attacker. second, who the hell cares if you look sloppy in a fight you can look good after you get done whippin'em! Tkd has some of the worst stragetys for self-defense out there. silly and out dated.....

I've seen a lot of boxers forget technique looking for the knockout shot. In fact, I saw a fight like that yesterday. don't remember the guys fighting though...

Plus mma fights generally don't look like movie fights. It's not pretty, and people who don't know what they're looking at will not enjoy it. It's different when you have the ground dimension added... i.e. you're always looking for a takedown or trying to avoid one...

        Sorry you were disappointed.

I don't think his post mentioned TKD at all....I know his sig does, but you didn't really say anything of value here. I think his point is that even at the highest levels of fighting, people have forgotten how to block and such. In a ring fight, blocking, parrying, etc is a necessary part of it (watch a heavyweight boxer...not too many of them leave their heads unprotected)...obviously street fighting is a different ballgame...get the knock out and then get the f--k out.

The point is simple and I think Shasan made it best...

When standing up in an MMA style fight...it is not going to look pretty, it is not going to look like a Van-Dam movie where punches kicks are blocked, countered and followed up on...When you are fighting someone who is a capable fighter and you are a striker, when you see an opening you go for it guns blazing, much like Wandeli Silva and Chuck Liddel do in most of their fights...You don't have time to look pretty and plan out counters, you are in there to win and win as fast as you can without getting yourself hurt, sometimes this calls for hay makers much like the one that Liddel nailed Alistair Overeem with at the last pride, it wasn't a pretty punch, but it was DAMN effective.

It has partially do to with the adrenaline dump and the bodies tendency to revert to gross motor muscle movements. Different fighters do it to to different degrees. That's why boxing and Muay Thai are much more successful in the full contact arena then other arts. They are systems that for the most part rely on gross motor movements. When things start flying and the adrenaline is pumping full bore, fine motor movements go out the window. That's why fights tend to break down and don't look much like controlled sparring. Form breaks down and you revert to gross motor muscle movements (which is what most of MT is). Look at the first UFC's where guys where supposed to be representing things like White Tiger Kung Fu, Wing Tsun etc.. When it went down, their form went out the window. Also, I've seen some Kung Fu schools where they work forms and techniques with all kinds of intricate hand movements and such, but when they start sparring full contact, it's starts looking suspiciously like kickboxing.

Guys what he is saying it these people know how to punch because they trained boxing or MT BUT they aren't really using it the way you would expect

Lowkicks that hit with the instep instead of the shin and a lot of Haymakers (dono if that's the right word) even though it is very much possible to use boxing as is in MMA, recently saw UCC 6 were a boxer entered MMA for the first time and he only used boxing to get a around 10 sec win
so proper punches are possible but not often seen

If adrenaline is responsible for it then why doesn't it happen in boxing or MT matches?

It does. Happens all the time. How many times have we heard boxing commentators saying, "this has just turned into a brawl now!"

I see it happen a lot on Friday night fights on ESPN.

We only have eurosport in Europe and I can't see that because I don't have a decoder
So we only see some top matches here (if at all)

Because most MMA fighters are not great boxers. And most boxers would not be great MMA fighters.

The perfect MMA fighter who can hit like Roy Jones, kick like , wrestle like Cael Sanderson, and hit BJJ submissions like a Gracie does not exist.

Probably never will because it took each of those fighters a lifetime to get as good as they are at their respective styles. To master all 4 will take so much time that you'd be ancient before you entered the ring, and then the big/young mediocre boxer/grapplers would beat your 100 year old body.
