    as long as deadly force is applied, you can legally retaliate with deadly force (unless you cant run away), but you have to say something like this hey i got a gun dont move or get out of here, if he jumps at you, you can shoot. No jury would give him money, besides if he lies its just your word against a muggers. By the way im not sure if youre allowed to carry a knife legally.

          In my neck of the woods there's no limit to the size of the blade as long as you carry it unconcealed. For instance, you can carry a large knife in a belt holster where everyone can see it, like Crocodile Dundee. My uncle actually used to carry a machete everywhere he went; "Got a little brush-clearing to take care of." So I suppose if you're really good with a samurai katana...

                There's an interesting issue about concealed weapons here in Seattle. They just built a new city hall but cannot install metal detectors since any gun that is properly registered and unconcealed is legal in public.

                  Also, keep in mind you can punch someone and it's considered assault, but when you stomp it's considered assault with a deadly weapon since you're feet are "deadly" (unless you practice tae kwon do or Shotokan).

                    Depending on the "conceal & carry laws" if allowed in your residence is the baby Glock or the Glock 26- 9mm. Small and potent, and can outpunch or outkick anyone here on this site - Guaranteed! But pepper-spray or as I call it - 'the Human Bug Spray' is also highly effective against multiple attackers for non-lethal defense and easy to carry as well. Make sure its a fox - the ones cops use.

                      A gun is a very offensive weapon (no, it doesnt shout rude words).

                      essentially when you use a gun then you are going to cause serious harm if not death with it.

                      With staffs and sticks they can be defensive weapons, they allow you to block parry and also keep harm at a distance. You don't have to hurt your opponent seriously to prevent an attack.

                      My opinion is that if you study anything for defense it should be with a view of mastery so that you can diffuse a situation before it gets violent, and if it does turn violent stop the attack with the minimum of effort and resistance.

                      While I can appreciate that carrying a powerful weapon can help resolve these sorts of attacks quickly, they can also inflame a dire situation further.

                      If you miss with a gun you could hit an innocent across the street,
                      if you miss with a staff you could hit someone standing next to you, but how many people stand next to you when your getting attacked?

                      my point is I suppose that we as human beings (and martial artists) should operate under a form of control that allows us confidence in our defence from attack, even to deadly proportions. But with restraint that allows for a proportional reaction to an event.

                      this isn't a troll about guns, I just don't feel I need to carry a weapon of that type.

                      Oh and I think a knife is far more deadly on the street because of the following:
                      * its concealable (you only need a few inches to kill apparently)
                      * the average person doesn't need training to use it
                      * it doesn't jam
                      * it doesn't need ammunition
                      * it doesn't need time to reload
                      * street fights usually turn into grappling matches after a few seconds
                      * people think guns are more deadly and so if a knife is brandished they will fight (and die)

                      although someone has just told me that a professional using a gun would use it defensively (retreating) whereas with a knife you have to advance to cause harm... so I suppose with that info knife vs gun the gun wins.

                          Lizard - I love Danetllo. He's my favorite and everyone also laughed at me because they like Leonardo. Apperantly the color purple and staffs are 'gay'...

                          I agree with whoever said guns are the most effective weopan. Yet, I don't like them much and I'd prefer to live in an age without them. Swords are cooler, I think.

                            The first two apply for a gun as well, as for the others:

                            A gun jams about 1 in 10000 times and even if it does its still a heavy metal object. Ammunition isn't really a problem, if you get attacked by 5 guys 30 rounds i think should do it, and try fighting long distance with a knife, reloading is the same as ammo except you dont need to reload in street fights, you just make sure the gun is always loaded. A street fight wouldnt turn into a grappling match if you had a gun. As for shooting innocent bystanders, a really skilled marksman can shoot so something like that never happens, but not many people actually train with a gun, also a gun doesnt have to result in death, you can shoot in the air to scare someone or if youre that nice you can shoot say the sleeve of their jacket just to show them whats up, or if you have to give them a foot or leg wound. A gun is the only weapon you can use from a distance or when running away and such also. It's just as defensive as offensive, if youre really worried about defense, learn how to use it like a knife in knifefighting or carry something like a metal briefcase and skill that.

                              what gun are you carrying with 30 rounds in it?

                              secondly, you can find reports all over the place of police in shoot outs from 10 feet away were 20 shots are exchange and no one is hit.

                              yes, there are some who are highly skilled with a gun ( practice weapon retention, reloading on the go, running and shooting,etc), but most people who carry go to the range and shot from the line. there is a false beleive that i have the gun i win. it doesn't mean you granted the win .

                                When sparring in my gym, someone who uses the stick well usually can hit the knife guy a number of times before getting hit - since the hand is a legal target for us and really nailing someones knife hand is likely to disarm, I think the stick/staff is probably the better weapon even though is is less immediatly deadly (I'm sure someone here knows more about that than this Kali newbie).

                                I like the knife better, though - I think it's more fun to work with.

                                Also a Panzer tank is pretty cool.
