I guess I've always had a hunger for 1on1 fighting but I've noticed that whenever I see/read/hear/or even think about fighting I get a major rush. I love all things MMA. I have been fighting for as long as I can remember, my dad says that even as a little kid, I'd pull him into the floor and elbow his stomach :-). Maybe the rush is from lack of training. I went to a local JJ class for about 2 weeks and didn't like it that much. The sensi was more into wristlocks and fancy looking small joint-lock holds. the whole two weeks I only grappled maybe 4 times. Got my first "official" submission on a black-belt TKD guy with a very awkward arm-bar first and then a guillotine choke in our second match. Felt really good. Anyways, I'm rambling but back to the original question, Do any of you out there get the intense urge to spar, and if so, what do you do about it? The obvious question is spar, but the gym on base doesn't have any mats to use, and my friend and I almost got arrested for grappling outside on the grass. :-P Cops thought he was trying to kill me, but I showed them how to do an armbar from the bottom guard position and they kinda got the message that being on the bottom isn't always a bad thing. :-)

Am I normal?

your just like me.... I am in high school and full of energy....
Right now I am wrestling, it's a tough sport for very tough (mentally) people.
I have done Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and loved it (we grappled everyday).
I did TKD but got fed up because the sparring was too unrealistic and kata was useless. They also taught us to "pull" kicks.... without any martial arts training I could have beat any black belt in there just due to my size and strength.
I would fight my friends but they won't let me because I am too good (not bragging, I just train more than they do).... So I look forward to high school wrestling, BJJ, Judo, and doing some boxing and kickboxing. Perhaps when I am old enough I can do MMA..... I have also played football, but right now I prefer the individual sports over team sports.
My suggestion would be to find a boxing/muay thai/brazilain jiu-jitsu/submission wrestling club near you and get started. I love fighting sports because they are just as if not more challenging than street fighting (because you go against someone the same size and skill as you) and they are perfectly LEGAL.

That is so true. My friends think it's funny when I go to the mall or something with them I always see these punk kids and thug-wanna-be's and I always want to roll with them. I'm very vocal about it too, thank god one of my friends is a 6'8" 280lb aspiring body builder. One look at him and the "gangstas" (haha) turn the other way.
I've tried to convince this dude to spar with me but he says he's not the violent type, I think he knows that he'd kill me or something and doesn't want to go to jail, I mean, I have faith in my fighting ability, but sometime you just have to draw the line. This would be like BJ Penn, who is a great fighter BTW, fighting Bob Sapp, who is a great heaping mound of unrefined rage, muscle, and anti-ability. No matter how good Penn is, he'd be squashed.
Any tips on how to fight BIG guys?

Against bigger guys I like to sit out while they're sparring on the pretense that I have to go to the bathroom, my knee hurts, etc. After they've been sparring for ten minutes you go up to them are say, "wanna roll?" Unless they're much more advanced than you, their exhaustion will be all you need.

Sounds good but this guy is HUGE! He'd break something of mine and beat me with it, I think I'm gonna try to get him tonight when I go to his house. Since his neck is so big, maybe I can triangle choke him, but I dunno if I want him in my guard. Like I said, he's 6'8" 280lb african american male who is an aspiring body builder and I'm a very slender 6'2" 175lb red-headed caucasian male who is an aspiring quotee of," Please sir, I don't know what got into me........What are YOU DOING WITH MY ARM???(*CRACK!!!!SNAP!!!*)........AGGGGG, IT HURTS, IT HURTS! I CAN SEE THE BONE!!!" Please keep me in your prayers, I'll let you guys know how the match goes tonight, even if I have to type with a pencil in my teeth.

lol@madchat18, dont worry you are perfectly normal, im 31 yrs old,2 kids, supposed to be responsible, but i too frequently get the need to roll, fight, brawl, just be thankfull you have someone to spar with, all my mates are lazy bums.
p.s. good luck rolling with your green mile friend, once u learn to control him, you will be able to control anyone, or you could just end up crushed like a bug, all the best.

Although, I personally think that "normal" is a matter of conforming to the accepted criteria of the masses, I would say that your behavior is common.
You may still have something to prove to yourself. Which is healthy. As long as you don't go around trying to prove things to other people, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
Martial arts, fighting, testing, etc., these should all be for personal development. If you ever find yourself unsure of what you were trying to prove, or who to, you may want to take a moment to regroup and reflect on what you are doing with the knowledge you have gained.
AND THOSE WERE......"WORDS FROM THE PULPIT" !!!!!!!
Kinda makes me want to weep, like a little wiener dog.

Nicely said spiderchoke, Well i just got back from his house and we didn't grapple or anything but I am in extreme pain. i think I am having an adverse reaction to the smallpox shot I had to get. I can barely move my right arm without major pain, if i hold it still it aches, all my joints (even my neck) feel like metal is scraping against them and I am exhausted. My stomach hurts and I have a headache. If any of you guys have had the shot and had the same reaction, please tell me so I know if it is normal or not... If not I need to go to the hospital (which I HATE DOING!) Hopefully It's just a little fatigue which would be strange cuz I havn't done anything today. Thanks in advance guys

Vee Jiu Jitsu, Arnis-Kali, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Tai Chi

jiu-jitsu may not be your thing.. but many of those fancy joint and wrist locks apply directly to when you are rolling around on the ground. you dont have to be standing to use some them... many BJJ moves are normal JJ moves except on the ground. Just a lil FYI stuff there
anyways... sounds to me that youd love a good muay thai kick boxing class where you spar regularly...
id also recomend that you pick up some of the MA documentaries from Morpheous or WinMx or Kazaa or whatever you use...
one that i know is really good is from the 70s and its called "Warrior Within" (its the documentary given in bruce lee's honor after his death)
anyways i hope that helps

Are you guys talking about actual fighting or sparring with someone? Madchat18, if you really want to fight someone don't bring your big black friend around, go to ethich neighborhoods and start challenging people. I mean it's not that hard to get into a fight.
