  • Has MA made me violent?

Every time I get drunk I always end up hurting someone. And it's always either push kicks or thai roundhouse kicks. I spend lots of my free time just wandering about the house throwing out combos and shadow boxing. So as soon as I lose my inhibitions I want to start doing moves on people.

Does MA really make people more violent? If you spend a lot of time practising moves does it make you want to try them out on people?

I'm actualy thinking of giving up MA because of this, I don't want to end up really hurting someone or not having a social life because I'm a complete Bastard when under the influence of alcohol (and giving up alcohol isn't an option because its too much fun and is something I like to do with friends).

Firstly, browsing through your previous posts, I don't think you're really capable of hurting anyone. Probably just making a nuisance of yourself, so there's no worries there.

But you may come across a moderately hard guy who's in a bad mood. And then you're going to get hurt really badly.

You need to mature. If you can't have a bit of beer without feeling the need to prove yourself you're either about 15 years of age, or in need of some kind of counselling.

Pass on the martial arts for a while. You'll only give them a bad name when you a) Act like a prick and b) get the shit kicked out of you.

    No offence intended.

No,martial arts doesn't make a person more violent, it's the person that makes himself more violent.

You could be throwing combo and doing shadow boxing outside of the gym, because martial arts is something you love doing.

In your case it sounds like alcohol really has a bad effect on you,if you are going around trying to start fights. You are responsible for your own actions whenever you drink.

Alcohol is known to make many people more aggressive and violent when drinken in excess.

To me it sounds like you are looking for any excuse for your behaviour when you drink instead of dealing with the facts and taking responsibility for your own actions.

If you don't want to be going around hurting people when you drink then give up the alcohol not the martial arts. Be a man and admit you have a drinking problem.

However, you said giving up alcohol isn't an option, because it is too much fun, shows me you need some growing up and stop blaming martial arts for your attitude.

            Being violent makes you violent.

If you really are concerned, then get help.

Go to a conflict resolution class. I know that all the instuctors at my last school were required.

Also, ask yourself why you feel like you have to prove something to a bunch of cattle in a bar. These people don't know what you do. Test your mettle against some one more of your experience, or of more experience than you.

Stop playing with the kids and be careful before you hurt someone.................by accident.

you get the same effect if you pack a pistol. you'd shoot somebody as long as you have an 'attitude'.

Yeeeeah, I agree with that. Perhaps I wouldn't put it so harshly... but, ya know.

                  Me fifteen?

                  I'm insulted!

                  I'm almost seventeen!

I don't think I need counselling or anything like that. Perhaps I need to limit my drunkeness. I'm not in a bad mood or anything, I just start to feel that fighting is really fun (plus allows me to show off to untrained people). I never hit hard but it just worries me a bit, accidents can happen.

Everyone seems to agree that martial arts doesnt make you violent but I'm still unsure. If I had never done martial arts then I would not have a reason to show off.

Next time I will drink less and make a real effort to control myself.

You know someone called me a prat last night and it really got to me.

Well thanks for being honest with your opinions.

Guys like Lizard are why I study martial arts. If I ever do have to fight, I hope it is against someone who is drunk. Makes things easier.

You need to grow up quick before you do something permanently stupid. Your problem is you. Not martial arts.

Whoa guys, I think he gets the point. No need to make fun of him. The brutal honesty was enough (I hope to God) to make him realize that it was messed up.

Hey bud, you shouldn't be drinking at all if you are only 17 yrs. old. No wonder you can't handle your alcohol.

Sounds to me like you do need counselling, you shouldn't limit your drunkness, you just should get off the alcohol period if you think fighting is really fun.

Admitting you are an alcoholic and need help is the first step to solving your problem, but you don't think you need help.

If you don't learn discipline and self-control, you'll never do MA for more than a few years anyways.

If you were at my club, and our teacher heard you were getting drunk and "showing off", you'd be shown what "showing off" really is, ala hyperextended elbows and choked unconscious.

Not only are you giving a bad name to yourself, but to your instructors also. If they found out, I'd hope they stop teaching you or teach you something about "humility" and discipline.

Learning how to fight can give someone confidence, which can, without discipline, lead to overconfidence which is the down fall any fighter (in or out of the ring). Coupled with excessive drinking, which lowers you inhibitions and can make you even more confident and at the same time retarding motor function/jugdgement etc. With that said you are the one that makes the choice, to show off/get attention, don't blame MA.

Honestly, I don't drink and never have but as a fighter I would be concerned about the loss of control. Also remember I always say if you can't have respect for the person have respect for what they may know. Anyone can get dropped.

I think Van damme got into a bar fight in amsetrdam a few years ago talked crap and go his ass handed to him....so be careful. And if you don't want to stop the sauce cool....you use moderation.
