The way I see it to be effective in the street takes more then a few MAs strung together.
1) You need to be able to fight in all the ranges from outside range to the ground.
2) You need to know weapons and defenses against weapons.
However the arts that like the best in combination is:
1) Mt
2) Bjj
But you also need a weapons based MA that concentrates heavily in the knife and stick.
If you are truly serious about self-defense then you should also consider learning firearms.
The most important thing to self-defense regardless of style or system is mindset- mental toughness!
The things you should be looking for in SD systems are:
1) Mindset
2) Based in science
3) Reality
4) Psychology
5) Anatomy, physiology, kinesiology
6) Techniques in all the combat ranges
7) Weapons
8) Full contact drills
9) Use of force and the law
10) Realistic scenario training
Note: Do not look to traditional MAs like Karate or Kung Fu for self-defense!
