  • [QUOTE=Andy Murray]Bruce Lee would have been able to destroy ANYBODY in the UFC if they fought ina real Gong Sau match ... as would any Kung Fu master.
    QUOTE]

What exactly are you basing that on? Something you imagined?

I think that most traditional "Masters" were proven to be full of shit along time ago. Does that mean they are all useless, no, but many are.

I am just guessing that you are going to tell me that either you or your teacher are the exception (Yawn).

Sorry I'm late. There are just so many new idiots popping up lately its hard to keep track of them all!

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this Andy Murray kid is that Phil Elnore troll under another name, and who knows how many others?

        • The man would be a Champion in one of the weight classes, he was an innovator and way ahead of his time even during the 60's late 70's...

          • In his own weight class, Bruce Lee would have kicked ass. Because Bruce Lee was a true fighter and would have adopted any stretagy that is useful for fighting.

If they are useless, then they are not real masters.

Royce kicked ass in the unlimited weight class with randomly picked opponents. That plus the fact he went unbeaten for 11 fights and won 4 fights a night is the greatest accomplishment in martial arts history. Bruce is da man but couldnt hold Royces jock.
And there is no wieght class for the diminutive folk. He would be in the kids class, 6th grade weight level if there was, 109lbs lol

                • Of course he would...

First, I have not read through this entire thread, but I hope the issue of "JKD is the best martial art" has been solved. The statement is against everything JKD stands for... Bruce Lee hated discussions about different "styles" of fighting because he believed that fighting was fighting. Until a man comes along with more than two legs and two arms, there is only one real style of fighting... fighting with two arms, two legs.

Secondly, Bruce Lee was not just an actor. Any such statement is based on ignorance of the man. His dedication to martial arts is inspiring; if I am not mistaken, many of the asian martial art instructors in san francisco did not like Bruce because he was "giving away" their secrets.

Third - and I agree this is a ridiculous thread to be discussing since the man is, indeed, dead (though it is fun to think about) - but there is no doubt in my mind that Bruce Lee would win in the UFC. The UFC is a poor mans version of pride fighting and, after watching the UFC, am very disappointed in what I see. See, assuming that 1.) Bruce competed 2.) was in his prime 3.) still believed in the JKD philosophy (which would mean that BJJ would be part of his arsenal) I really don't believe anyone could beat him.

See, UFC is about boxing, muay thai and groundwork. Bruce Lee would be well-versed in these areas and well-versed in areas that UFC does not utilize. Yes, BJJ may not have the takedown techniques that wrestling does, but you must remember that Bruce was very good in Kali-Silat... Kali has very good take-down techniques and many other uses; punching, etc. Also, the man had impeccable technique... his intelligence and understanding of the human body is something that would have given him a serious edge. His approach to fighting was almost spiritual... Also, Bruce Lee stressed unpredictability, and lord, most of the UFC fighters are so predictable it is sad.

Oh yeah, and if Maui is still on the board, do you really understand that before Bruce Lee became frustrated with traditional martial arts, he was considered one of the greatest wing-chun martial artists in the world?

I mean no disrespect though. If martial arts have taught me anything, it is to respect everyone, even if their ideas may be ignorant. Some of these childish exchanges are disappointing.

"If people say Jeet Kune Do is different from 'this' or from 'that,' then let the name of Jeet Kune Do be wiped out, for that is what it is, just a name. Please don't fuss over it." - Bruce Lee

First of all, Bruce Lee is not 109 lbs, he weights 128 pounds. Second of all, you are acting like Bruce Lee would never improve his groundfighting if he fights in the ring.

Even the Dragon himself admits he'd most assuradly face defeat against that mere boxer.

The REAL question is could a present day Lee take on a present day Ali. Now THATS a fight. They could fight over the jello pudding packs in the resthome.
First of Bruce Lee did not admit that or say that...what he said is the only way he would fight Muhammed Ali is if he would be able to trap...and kick..and finger thrust and do what he would normally do in a fight other wise he would be getting in the ring to fight someone at there own game who is a master at what he does. They were wanting him to fight Ali wearing boxing gloves and only throwing punches and nothing else...now does that sound fair to you? I don't think so.

                            • It is not like BRuce was not training his grappling...He had grappling way back when. He implented grappling that he learned from Judo Gene Lebell and from Wally Jay's small circle Jiu Jitsu. At the time of his death he had 33 formal grappling moves that he would teach...plus the Kali and Silat. Also the man was not weak. He might have been little but he wasn't weak. He had 15.5" forearms and 13.5" biceps...for a guy of his stature that his pretty good size. He was a fitness phenom who constantly thrived to be the best. He wasn't known for his acting he was known for his martial arts ability. It is hard to say how he would do in a UFC type fight but I do know from talking to the many people that have trained with him personally that he would do well. I agree with the one guy on here...let the dead rest. Everyone wants to bring up Bruce Lee and compare him to someone of today let the man be. As for Royce beating all those guys in UFC 1,2 and 3...he mainly went up against guys that were not as familiar with the ground game as he was when it come to the many different submissions. I am not saying that he was not a good fighter because he was and no one can argue that BUT his family are the ones that started the UFC do you really think they would have done it if they thought he was not going to win. It was a great marketing plan to get their name out there and prove there system is better. And it worked...but just like everything in the martial arts world...when something like that happens it is only a matter of time before people start learning what you do and they start to change it and make it better...Larry Hartsell told me back in 1994 that "it is only a matter of time before the wrestlers learn the submissions and add the striking and when they do that they will dominate the sport" that is exactly what happened.
