  • left hooks

when u do left hooks, i've been taught that u move the right shoulder fwd then hook.
ie after punching from or kicking from the right side, u will be moving ur body into the hook.

however, another 'advanced' student was telling me u don't have to do that all the time. ie u can just 'arm punch' without moving the body.

this contradicts what the i was told as a beginner that u should just move your body quicker to do the left hook. ie always use the body, not just the arm..
    so which is it?

You're learning correct technique by putting your body into it. After practicing it for awhile, you'll find your hook getting "shorter" as you get more efficient and quick.

Keep putting your body into it. Do it with as strict form as you can, especially while working the focus mitts. When you spar more, it becomes shorter but its no arm punch.

How do you expect to rock some guys jaw or smash his ribs with your arm only?

you can do both just know that when you put your shoulder forward the weight of your body is going into the hook so its a lot more powerful than a hook with just your arm
