Yaw Yan

Hi Happy New Year to you all

Im just wondering if anyone has any info on Yaw Yan, and whether or not people have seen the Yaw Yan practicioners (cant spell!) fight other MA. It seems very close to Muay Thai.

Well I studied Yaw Yan in Manila for a short time. If you want a clear idea of what it looks like in action...it's simply Tae Kwon Do and Muay Thai combined together. There is a heavy emphasis on flexiblilty training for the legs. Use of the basic boxing blows, elbows, and knees are taught, but 95 percent of the art is kicking. Unlike Muay Thai, which relies on only two kicks (roundhouse and straight kick) to get the job done, Yaw Yan has a ton more different kicks, which are very aerial and acrobatic.

There are ads in the Manila area that promote Yaw Yan as "the ultimate art of self defense". I wouldn't go that far. It's a tough sport, but in terms of a street art, many of the kicks are impractical due to their flashy nature. I lived in Bangkok for 3 years and I got the opportunity to learn Muay Thai. I feel that Muay Thai is simpler and more effective to use. The training methods of Yaw Yan are a bit extreme...utilizing a lot of bouncy stretching motions that are bad for the joints. It's a tough workout though, I'll definitly say that much.
