  • Dating in Muay Thai?!?!

    Hey All
I want your opinions on this---should you date that guy/girl on your team, or who goes to class with you or works out at your gym... Does this cause emmotional conflicts, is it something that would be encouraged/discouraged? (i am a girl by the way--but a guy's perspective would be awesome). Thanks
    Love

All the women at my MMA school have always been huge, ugly manbeasts so the thought of dating them never crossed my mind.

    Good question though...

I don't think it would cause me any emotional problems? Haha it would be fun to have a girlfriend in Muay Thai, not many girls I know in it, but as the last guy said. Most are ugly man-beasts haha. (some exceptions of course) :P

the only problem would be is if u guys broke up, cause then u would have to see eachother all the time even though u didnt like eachother anymore, which is probobly what will happen if u go for it.

          That's true.
          But... (don't hate)
I don't think a lot of guys are going to want a girl who could kick their ass, those girls would be lucky to get what they can. There's obviously the hot ones, but then again.. most of the "women or girls" in my gym have tattoos and are buff. They look like they are going to drive their harleys down an alley and beat some guy with chains. For real, who wants a girlfriend with bigger muscles than you?

wow, this insight is intresting... and at the same time 'scary'. I did not realize that women in Muay Thai had such a stereotype. I guess I would be the opposite of what is being described--but is that for the most part girls in muay thai? do all of them have to be massive, fugly, tatooed, etc? Please let me know, beccause if this is so, i better get out right away

I met my girlfriend at the gym 5 years ago. Since we've been together, we've lived in Asia for two years, trained and fought in Thailand (both of us), and continue to compete here. You don't want to date a guy who is insecure and intimidated by you, but that certainly isn't the case for all the guys at the gym. I doubt the serious trainers at your gym feel threatened by you. Teacher/student relationships are a gray area with me though....

whoa!?! it must hell to train in your neighborhood,
the club in my campus had non of those, one member is a yoga practitioner(we call her rubber doll, mind your thoughts,...only because of her extra flexibility), a few girls from the Cheer and Dance club....(you go figure), a couple of prim, soft spoken girls, and the rest are girlfriends of club members.

oh and for dating in class...what's the limit? who limits?...not yourself?, you have your free will.

As an instructor and gym owner, we heavily frown on dating in the gym. In fact, if someone dates too much in the gym, we counsel them first, and will kick them out if it continues.

                  Why?

Rarely does much good, if any, come of it. In fact, quite often it causes many, many problems. We have ran into this again and again.

If you are interested, I can post many of the scenarios that we ran into over the years. In short, dating in the gym generally disrupts a healthy training environment and may even cause students to quit and miss out on training.

Lool I was just posting the negative side..
Yeah there is a lot of hot girls, and if not hot, really nice.
And if kckbxblnd was reffering to me, i am not insecure like that, I was speaking for most people.. I am just picky who I date. AnnNNyway it's not that bad, I have 4 days a week to hit on girls, I use my time at the gym for strictly training.
I can't lose my priorities. Haha

I think that legally an instructor cannot dismiss anyone from the class because they are dating another student. Quite frankly, it is none of his business. JKDFighter, doesn't your wife train at your gym? Isn't that the same thing? Maybe she is mad because you didn't paint the house last summer...the scenarios are endless. But martial arts classes are where we go to learn how to deal with the vissicisitudes of life, good, bad or ugly. So, grow up. Dan Inosanto met his wife in a class. Chai Sirisute met both of his wives in class. Seems a wonderful place to meet someone at least on the same page, whether or not they grow together or apart, they are starting from a basic trust. Kicking someone out because they are dating another student is an abrogation of your duties as instructor, to wit, helping students grow to be totally and freely human.

I didn't realize that you could remove someone for dating another person in a class--I can see where it could cause awkwardness and complications... But class could be a good turn on or aphrodesiac... lol. Anyway, do most girls in MT or kickboxing have a (unfair?) stereotype abotu their looks? Love Ya'll

Everybody's different. For some people it works out and for others it doesn't. It is very rare for a male martial artist to find a girl with the same passion for the martial arts, so if you do go for it. The hardest thing wil be making sure that it does not affect your focus or concentration. You must also, as hard as it may be, let them make thier own mistakes, and treat them no differently, in class, than you would anybody else. I would also like to take exception to the comment that female martial artits are ugly cows. The most beautiful girl I have ever met was my training partner for fifteen tears.

Haha, the stereotype exists, before I went to the gym, I would assume. There would be the 2 types of ppl there. People that want to learn how to fight, and ppl that want to work out. But as I said, theres a bunch of butch tattoo man-beasts, and then there are the hot normal girls. It's about a 60:40 Ratio. At least in my gym that's how it is~

The couple that plays together stays together. You should look for a guy thats interested in doing the same things that you do, someone you can share your thougths with, and who will understand where your coming from. I'm sure just as many couples break up from one member not understanding why their loved one is so devoted to martial arts.

I encourage anyone here that has a boyfriend or girlfriend, to get them down to your dojo for some classes. You'll learn a lot.
