i was also taught to step out at 45 degress when throwing the rear thai kick. this is because it will get you out of your opponents range, as well as giving your kick more power. standing still, or taking a step foreward when throwing the kick will just get u knocked out. also, i notice for me, when i dont take that step, im much more likely to be off balanced.

as for the original poster, yeah you arent using enough hip in your kick, u need to roll your hip over more when u kick. something to think about when throwing the rear leg kick is the position of your lead foot. before the kick is thrown, the lead foot is pointing straight forward, at 12 o clock. when the kick is thrown, your lead foot should be pointing at 7 or 8, ensuring you pivoted enough.

Or perhaps send me a link?

Is the the reverse butterfly the only hip exercise out there?

        Thanks people!
Imagine you are with your "Lady" and you are tyring to make a baby. You are on viagra and you are going all night long. Don't thrust, make circles. Put your feet shoulder width apart. That is the best way I can describe the exercise. Really get into it. 15-30 minutes at a time. But like these other folks said, work on your support foot pivot also. Use a chair. Do both exercises daily. And give it time; flexibility increases take time. Be sure to warm up first. I'd say 3 to 6 months you should see substantial improvement if you stretch daily.

angling to get a little height in your kick is one thing leaning back is another
what i am speaking of is the tendency of some fighters to lean backwards to try and throw more into the kick, all respect to you python ajarn Sirisute is a great teacher i am sure we are on the same page. in another instance I have seen a Rob Kaman Thai Pad drill tape where the fighter that is kicking the pads while Kaman holds them actually leans back when he kicks slips and falls, Kaman then makes a comment about how you should not lean back into your round kicks as it puts your center of gravity off. thats really what my point is leaning back while round kicking is bad. like i said a little angling of the upper body when throwing high is necessary but leaning back is something all together different.

Agreed...and yea, we are probably on the same page. You are right, leaning and angling are different. Some don't understand and DO tend to lean more than twist, which actually dissipates their power AND takes longer to recover to position, leaving them vulnerable.

I'm not sure to be honest, I know they are headed to England very soon for something. LOL, I don't follow what they're doing very well

Thanks for all the kicking info. I to am a novice and tight in the hips. I never really tried to use them until now. My instructor spend some one on time helping me with my roundhouse on the bag and I actually saw quite an improvement I am now concentrating more on my form and focusing on stretching out my hips for more flexibility cant wait to try it out again tommorow in class.
