  • Wanting to start Muay Thai...

Well hello everyone, I have been looking up a martial arts for a while and still deciding what to do, sadly im in a stupid town that has about 4 school which are 2 tae kwon doe, 1 karate and a gym for karate and boxing ect.

I did 3 months in TKD and didnt like it too much, I felt like i left and didnt learn anything to actually protect myself with, I am only 15 so i dont know if Muay Thai is a little extreme, I called and they take on people who are 13 and older but I dont want to leave and not be able to walk

Also how long would it take if i did start training so be able to use this as proper defense in a street fight,a kid has been trying to beat me up alot but luckily for me Im too fast and he cant catch me, almost got me once but I want to be able to just kick his @$$ because its really annoying. I dont even know his name or address so I cant like call the cops or anything
    thanks all.

Chris, Where do you live? Are you saying there is no Muay Thai in your town or there is but they only take new students 13 yrs and older? Or are you going to travel to a neighboring town for the Muay Thai?

If the instructor is credible, you will not get beat up and not be able to walk when you start out...well, if you train right, your muscles should be sore, but you should not get slammed in the thigh or anything. You should be taught basics and get a good sweat for the first few classes. I have my students sparring after the first month, sooner if they are exceptional and longer if they are not ready to spar. Many schools make a student wait for a few months before they are allowed to spar....just depends.

As far as learning self defense right away...you bet, definitley! Muay Thai is both an incredible ring sport AND a great form of self defense, which generates alot of power in every technique.

Good Luck with it! And my opinion...stick with the Muay Thai and give it a go. BUT, don't make the mistake of getting a few classes and then trying to go kick the bully'a ass. Fighting outside of the ring should be a last resort, but when he does cross that line too many times, you will be prepared to handle yourself.

What town do you live in?

Mmm, I started MT about a month ago.
Yeah, as python said, you shouldn't be fighting and etc for at least a little while.
There is a lot of conditioning involved in muaythai, least for me there was.
I think it's better that you condition before you go, just so you can keep up with everyone. Unless you have some money to throw around, to buy shinpads and etc. As for me, I'm not the richest guy, LOL so ... yeah. Even if I wanted, im not getting shinpads. Unless they are free or something, but, thanks to not wearing them, i have very minimal feeling in my shins, which is good.. In MT, idunno... back before I was in it, hearing about it and etc. I developed a statement about Muay Thai fighters having iron muscles from endless training. I don't think muay thai is good if you're looking for self defense... even though it is an exceptional one, there are better. I think you would be better off in ju-jitsu or sestemba (spelling) but for the reason of the iron body, having someone being able to hit me, and i can just shrug it off and give them a swift kick to the head. That made me get into it, if you're considering taking MT, then I suggest you put some thought into it before choosing. If you ever wanted to be really good, you have to have the desire. Taking it just to fight some guy isn't cool. Anyway, on that topic. Why don't you just kick him in the balls? It's not like it's a "fair" fight right? There's no rules on the streets, so yeah... if i were you, just kick him in the balls, and when he's down kick the hell out of him some more, break something? then just tell him if he comes after you again, you'll make it worse. mm... well I hope that helps a little.

      Edit: Expanded

Sorry, I didn't explain correctly, I have wanted to take some form of Martial Arts before this kid but Muay Thai always interested me. Its early in the morning so I am going to call the Muay Thai gym thats close to my house and find out some more information.

And python I live in Australia, Victoria, Shepparton... (Where?) Quite a small town 2 hours north of Melbourne, look it up if you like lol.

        Keep you updated, Cya

        EDIT:

I just went and saw a 1 hour lesson at the gym 10 min from my house, I think I will go and look for something else a little less extreme after seeing everyone sparring get some nasty injuries so i would rather go with something a little less extreme... hehe, maybe ill look around for Jui Jitsu since i heard alot of good things about that, Thx again everyone
